The Missouri Civil War Museum is housed in the old 1905 Jefferson Barracks Post Exchange (PX) and Gymnasium building, formerly part of the Jefferson Barracks military post, which is still an active military installation to this day. Renovations began in 2003, and were completed 10 years later in 2013, with an opening date of June 29, 2013. During the Civil War, the property which this museum is located upon, contained various hospital ward buildings, where suffering and death occurred, thus making this sacred ground, and a most appropriate location for a Missouri Civil War Museum, honoring our soldiers of the past and present.

It isn't a huge museum, but, it has a lot of very interesting artifacts. We started off in the basement and then went up stairs. I am very glad we went.

Outstanding job! This was a great place to visit and see how Missouri fit into the Civil War. The men and women who restored this old building and now keep it run should be very proud of what they have accomplished. My 3rd great grandfather...More

For its size this is a very good museum. A not for profit organization runs it and they have done exceptionally well. Very good film on the history of the border war between Kansas and Missouri and Missouri's involvement in the civil war. Located on...More

Only if they are very, very interested in that time period. City Museum is a better option for them. Or the Magic House is tailored made for that age.

There is seating in every room, and a wheel chair is available. There is also an elevator.
