Viewing platform that overlooks the Berkeley Pit that was created from open-pit copper mining from 1955 to 1982. The pit is currently filling with water which contains heavy metals from the former mining operations. The new mining operations can be seen in the background of...More

The history and the story behind the Pit is interesting and scary to think that this area is so toxic.

I was alone on the observation deck for the Pit on a fine October afternoon. Recorded information are very good and provide good insights. Plus, some pictures with explanations are available. I would have liked to go nearer the pit itself, but this is probably...More

Well worth the stop and the $1 entrance fee if you have the slightest interest in mining. Or, even if you are just a big kid who likes to imagine digging a gigantic hole in the ground.

Sad that this is what will kill people, but it is a beautiful shade of green blue and part of their history. Sad the birds died here last year when they flew into it. Hopeful the scientists and engineers can find a safe solution.

Amazing view of the pit and surrounding mountains. There is a fee to access the viewing platform but everything was closed when we got there and the tunnel to the platform was open.

Easy to find. In-expensive. A short visit provided a informative picture of mining in the Butte area.

This old mine is not in operation anymore. it is located just outside town and is seen from anywhere. It was interesting to visit and observe, reading the plaques and listening to the recorded explanations. A 2 $ entrance charge.
