Bear Paw Battlefield may not look like much if you just stop by, but of you ask the Ranger to take you on the 1.25 mile tour it will come alive for you. The ranger was already with another couple when we arrived, but we...More

Bear Paw was the site of the last battle of the Nez Perce war in October 1877. It is about 16 miles south of Chinook, in northern Montana, run by the National Park Service. A hidden gem, for sure! There is no visitor center at...More

This is the site of the battle and surrender of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce nation. They were 40 miles from freedom. An eerie place. The winds across the Prairie grasses sing the cries of the fallen. While there we experienced a terrific rain...More

Before you go to the site, watch the video at the Museum and Visitor Centre. Then walk slowly around the site and let the video evoke the story of the battle for you. Heartbreaking.

It feels amazing walking the grounds of where the battle took place. You can feel the souls, the sadness. A nice walk, but wear walking shoes. They were so close to safety.

The desolation of this battlefield reflects the sadness of the Nez Perce war of 1877 that ends here. Cut off from their horses by a surprise cavalry attack, the Nez Perce were not able to make the last 30 miles to the Canadian border and...More

Unfortunately, the museum was closed when we went. It's only open Mondays through Fridays. The road is now paved all the way to the battlefield. The area is lovely, with great historical markers and plaques. There is also a ranger available to talk about the...More
