You can easily drive to a high-elevation parking area, so the hike itself is not nearly as long as one might think looking up from the Bitterroot Valley. Well-maintained trail through various tree stands, and then above treeline to the Ranger outlook on top. Glorious views! Hint: If the top is not clearly visible and nearby clouds are not at... More

After a fun drive UP a winding mountain road you'll reach the trail head and begin a steady and sometimes steep 4 mile hike. You'll start out in a pine and spruce forest and as you gain altitude go through three other zones finally ending up at over 9,000 feet and the top to St. Mary's peak. What a view.....the... More

LOVED this hike. Not terribly challenging, but a great reward at the end. You can see for miles! Bring a wind breaker as it gets chilly and super windy at the top. The hike doesn't take very long, but the drive in does. Don't underestimate it!

This road to the trailhead is about 7 very bumpy miles. Make sure you have a vehicle that can handle this terrain. We hiked in mid June and the weather was perfect. It was challenging and we had some slippery snow to hike through, but it was worth every breath it took me to get to the summit. It was... More

We hit it on a great day 70 degrees, sunny and dry. Little breeze. The road going up to the trail is a bit rough, but it's pretty. Saw a young buck and several deer. It is a moderate hike, it's a bit steep. But the view at the top is awesome

St. Mary's peak is an adventure remembered for a lifetime. The trail head is about 10-12 miles off highway 93. The gravel road as it approaches the base of the mountain is a typical dusty trail. The Forest Service markers designate a twisty, switchback route to the beginning of the hike. There is a Forest Service latrine at the trailhead.... More

St. Mary's Peak is located roughly 3 miles West of Stevensville. It is a 30 minute drive to the parking lot off of St. Mary's Road off of Montana Highway 93. The road is well maintained during the Summer, however, Spring provides some rough ruts in the road so NO small cars please. Once to the parking lot, it is... More

Moderately strenuous, but a beautiful hike summer and fall. Bring water as there is no water available on the hike. The top has a fire tower, very cool and the views are incredible!
