They say it is an easy excursion. Yes, but only for those that climb up the Mont Everest twice a week :-)
If you are an office worker with limited fitness, be prepared for a hard work.
It is a beautiful area. Walking up to the entrance of the canyon from the parking place takes about an hour. Walking up to the top is about 90 minutes and 3000 stairs.
Walking back to the parking place is an another 90 minutes.
One can reward him- or herself in a "Hütte" on the peek with beer, Almdudler, Coke, sandwiches etc.
The landscape is really breath-taking.

If your condition is not that good please skip this trip!!
When you park your car at the parking place in Mixnit you still have to walk for ca one hour uphill.
The entrance is not that expensive.
But then the journey starts.
You have to walk ca 1400 meters. It sounds easy but please have a look at the pictures!!!
It is a bit heavy but please take a rest sometimes and be aware of the spot you are.
After leaving the klamm you still have to climb a bit to reach a restaurant.
And then you have to walk back for ca 2 hours to the parking place.
It sounds hard....but it is worth it!!!

This is a beautiful place not so far away from Graz. You will have the chance to climb millions of wooden stairs that goes through the canyon. Add to it a waterfall and you will get the complete picture.
Make sure you have proper footwear, and also some waterproof jacket won't hurt. Although you won't have to climb cliffs, the wooden stairs are steep and wet, you can easily fall, if not careful.
The trip lasts around 4-5 hours, therefore it could be demanding for those who are not in the best shape.
Once on the top, you will find a 'Hütte' where you can have a good meal, have a beer and a well-deserved rest.
The route back is not through the Gorge any more, but it's still rocky, so it will be demanding.
Overall, it will be a nice trip, it's worth the effort.

Stunning views just on the walk up from the car park. ( by the way a toilet there and gasthaus by the car park). It took us 50 mins walking slowly. Even though there are all those steps up the Klamm we found it fine just taking it steadily. Being close to 70, unless you are completely unfit it didn't seem a problem. The whole klamm is quite stunning our day was slightly misty with fall colours so that added to the atmosphere. At the top there is then a 10ish minute walk to a gasthaus. It too internally is charming and the food good. As we had a car parked at the top by a friend we didn't do the return. The website has phone numbers of local taxis. We took 2 hours on that actually klamm section plus the start walk of 50mins and then the 10/15 walk to the gasthaus.

The Graz tourism website says "The exciting ascent involves 164 wooden bridges and ladders along 1300 meters. This involves conquering 350 meters of altitude". By the time we hit number 135, it was no longer exciting. ;)

First, you climb pretty steeply on a hike over very rocky terrain just to reach the beginning of the gorge from the parking lot. Stop at the little kiosk and pay your €3,50. Then another hour or so climbing all these steps and ladders. Around every corner you think "surely that must be the last one"! Only to see another set of steeply climbing stairs and ladders to conquer. And again at the next corner, and again, etc. Some parts were so narrow, we almost had to turn sideways. Finally you make it to top and you hike another 10-15 minutes to a small cafe/hut at the top, where you can sit and gather your wits as well as have a snack before starting down the mountain. We could not believe how high we had climbed, but it was literally from the base to the top of the mountain.

The return trip is on a different path because the ascent is basically a one-way deal as there is absolutely no room to pass people on most of the trail. And I think it would be really scary going down some of those ladders, especially the really steep sections. The trip back down takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours and is a steep angle down almost the entire way, over uneven, very rocky ground.

We did the whole thing in 5 hours, which is about average I think. I do feel it will be one of our most-talked about days of the trip, just because it isn't really on the American tourist radar and also because we're rather proud we managed it.

We started our trip in Mixnitz, then followed the signs to the entrance, this part can be challenging for some people, it’s just 1,2km but steep walking. Inside of the gorge is the walking easier and slower due to lots of people staying and taking pictures or waiting for people upfront to climb the ladders. The gorge is 1300m long, with 350m cant (super elevation), it take approximately 2,5 hours to reach the last ladder (you will climb 164 ladders in total). The trail is only one-way, from the last ladder it takes cca 10min to Guter Hirte which is restaurant and resting place. From there you can choose from two paths to reach Teichalm, one is over the top of Hochlantsch (1720m) or by descant to the lake, first one is longer and more difficult, but the view is worth it, on the second one you will have nice easy long through gorgeous nature and see cows grazing up the hills. From the restaurant to Teichalm lake the first path take 3 hours the most, second one is 1,5 hours max. In Teichalm you can see the iconic wooden cow (Reisen-kuh) lake and typical Austrian buildings, but I would also recommend to visit the peatland, entrance is right next to the Reisen-kuh.

One of the nicest trails Ive been on. A few reviews mentioned the walk from car park being boring - I disagree it was scenic with waterfalls and very pleasant.

I would agree that it was nothing compared to the walk/climb ahead. My adult son and I did this and it needs a certain level of fitness and you'll need to be free from any knee or leg injuries (pretty obvious but be aware)

Proof of the pudding here is I would do this again at the drop of a hat. Fantastic views and breathtaking scenery.

This experience was wonderful. But be aware that when you first start walking from the parking area it is an hour walk just to the entrance, and you do no see a whole lot in that hour, and the you get to the entrance they charge you to enter. it takes a good 5 hours to go up and and come back down, that's if you are not taking breaks! It is stunning and the small waterfalls and hand built walkways and stairs make the trip that much more interesting! the walk is all up hill, and the walk back down is very rocky and steep! But over all it is an experience I won't forget.

This gorge is stunning place to feel the rocks around you. Made of 164 ladders and bridges it gives you a very special hiking experience. When you are lucky, you can see capricorns. I recommend this to people with a good conditions and also body shape as we saw many cases, where some persons had problems to pass the bridges. Also it is good to come there not at the weekend or top season days as it can be completely full. Fortunatelly, we were quick and skipped all the crowds, but our guide told us, that they waited even 10 minutes on the ladders to move! If experienced with not so many people, this place brings you an amazing moments and at the end you can reward yourself with a good beer or typical austrian soda called Almudler :)

Bärenschützklamm is a ravine in Styria, located in Fischbacher Alps between Mixnitz und Teichalmsee.
The hiking trail, although a little steep and strenuous at the beginning, overall it is a great experience for all ages to challenge one's strength and endurance while taking a pleasure in the surrounding. This hiking excursion will lead you up over 100 ladder-type bridges over small canons, waterfalls and rapids. Apart from the beauty of the hike itself, the view from the top of the trail is breathtaking! Be aware that the route is a one direction only, one cannot turn back and climb down the ladders, there is only upwards.
