Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center (FPSC), originally built as a public research facility of the Desert Research Institute, has attracted nearly two million visitors since its opening in 1963. The uniquely shaped building, listed on the national register of historic places, was constructed around large panels of an early large-scale solar energy system designed by forward-thinking Reno architect Ray Hellman. Those initial ideas of renewable energy and sustainability have been revived through new solar electric and wind turbine installations on site, as well as updating the original components. FPSC has inspired countless students through field trips, and engaged the public through decades of planetarium programming, free observatory facilities, and exhibits.FPSC is Northern Nevada’s only venue specializing in space, astronomy, and related fields. The building contains three basic components: a newly-renovated 60-seat Star Theater housing a digital planetarium and large-format film system, a 3000 sq. ft. Exhibit Hall with both permanent and changing exhibits, and an extensive Science Store, as well as a classroom and fabrication areas. FPSC serves the university, from undergraduate to graduate students and faculty as a technological resource, and it serves the larger community as a public science education nexus. FPSC attracts a high number of visitors to the university campus: up to 15,000 K-12 students per year through field trip programs, 20,000 residents from Northern Nevada, and 20,000 out-of-state tourists.

Thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit; it sounds like you didn't have a chance to check out our hands-on activities or a new planetarium show in our Dome Theater, which has updated technology and seats. We invite you back to spend a bit more time here and see what's up! More

Thank you for your feedback! We have a small Exhibit Hall as extension of our primary resource, planetarium shows in our Dome Theater! We invite you back to see a star show, which is what we do best! More

I've been coming here since I was a little girl with my Dad. It's the same exhibits (although slightly updated in recent years), and the same astronaut food, and similar shows every time we come. But it's a really neat place. It has a special place in my heart and I'm glad it has stayed afloat so long. I hope... More

I took my grandsons to the Planetarium last week. I hadn't been there in many years and was disappointed to find nothing had really changed. The show visual was of very poor quality, they really need to invest in a new projector (even the kids said it was lame and they are 10, 8 & 7). The static display is... More

We recently had the pleasure of visiting the planetarium with family. I had not been to one since I was a small child, it was so much more than I expected, it is affordable and there are several shows to pick from. Arrive early and enjoy the lobby exhibits!

For finishing up our unit on the solar system this was a great ending for my students. They loved the movie and the theater. Loved touching the meteors in the exhibition hall. Students enjoyed seeing the different meteors from around the US and the planets through the lenses.

The shows are fantastic, the staff is awesome, the displays are very well done, and the gift shop items are excellent! I became a member years ago and the value is out of this world, all the shows you can watch for a whole year!

The movie theater has a good show about space and will be educational for the kids. You can also touch a meteor.
