The Nevada Historical Society's mission is to receive, collect, preserve, and conserve objects pertaining to but not exclusively related to the state of Nevada, Washoe County, the Great Basin region, the Lake Tahoe area, and the West as pertaining to the history of Nevada, in order to display, research, educate, exhibit and preserve the history for the people of Nevada. The Nevada Historical Society is home to the state's oldest museum. It was founded in 1904 with the purpose of collecting, preserving, and interpreting Nevada's heritage. Because the Society has been collecting for such a long time, the objects on display and the research collections represent exceptional historic resources. The Shepperson Gallery covers the range of life in Nevada and the great Basin from prehistoric native American inhabitants to the modern growth of Reno and Las Vegas. The Reno History Gallery covers the story about Reno's development from past to present. The Changing Hallway Gallery and Conference Room present ongoing series of temporary and traveling exhibitions dealing with Nevada and the West.

The NHS in Reno, Nevada, is a little-know resource that has much to offer schools in the surrounding area and to the general public. Museum entry and docent-led tours are free as well as their History on Wheels program.

I love going through the museum and seeing Nevada's history. Also they have a library for research. Great to research but have an agenda when you go in there to research. Otherwise you might be sidetracked by other things. Also know your docent, make sure...More

Take the time to speak to locals and get around there. Art museums and history at best. Check it all out.

The place is small but full of some very historical artifacts from years gone by. Great for us old natives and any visitor that comes to town.

Don't go, unless you have a few hours. Get lost in time and you won't regret it. Have went here since I was a child.
