The heart of downtown, where several walking tours begin, Market Square is a center of activity with art galleries, bookstores, antique shops, ethnic restaurants and many original 17th-century buildings.

I love this place. Sadly the tv chronicle shows have featured Portsmouth so much that now it's filled with often rude tourists. Go explore yet undiscovered areas like Amesbury center or Kittery center.

This is a beautiful downtown Portsmouth shopping area near the waterfront. Plan on staying a few hours to snoop the shops and have something to eat.

My husband and I went to Market Square on a day trip. The unique shops, eateries and beautiful church in the square, all made for an enjoyable day. It was nice to walk around and enjoy the scenery. We stopped in several stores, ate lunch...More

Yes it is. Cute with the church cafés etc. But there many other squares make this one or better. You come to visit Portsmouth and it's old houses not the square

Only spent a day but the visit was relaxing and pleasant, an easy walking town with plenty of unique shops and restaurants. Many places to sit outside and enjoy a meal or a snack. We wanted to take a boat tour but they were not...More

Downtown Portsmouth is one of my favorite places to visit. With interesting shops and galleries, good restaurants and excellent coffee, not to mention street performers and great people watching, it is the sort of downtown that every city would love to have.

There is something for everyone in this area. Book shops, coffee shops, a variety of restuarnts and boutiques and street performers. This is a great place to stroll or meet up with friends.

There's a wonderful sea water beach ar New Castle Common. There's a large playground, well manicured lawn with trees then a beach & water but also rocks to climb and explore.

Coffee places open at 7 am during week, 7:30 on Sunday. Stores usually open by 10 am, or earlier. So have a cup and a goodie, sit and enjoy the square, and watch the people. More to life than shopping.
