I have come here year in and year out to catch monster Stripers of all sizes. You can do fly fishing or some live bait fishing with mackerel, whatever your skill level you are guaranteed to be catching fish all day.
This is the most knowledgable captain in the area and a must book fishing experience. Call in early because these charters go pretty quick. The Striper season is a hot ticket, and a perfect day on the water.

Peter took us out for a full day trip. I have been on a lot of fishing trips but this one was the best I have ever been on. Not only did we catch fish all day but the views around the Wentworth Marina were amazing. Peter is knowledgeable, friendly, and knows where to find fish. He also allowed us to switch between Fly Fishing and bait fishing any time we wanted to try something new. I would highly recommend booking. It is worth every penny.

I have come to know of Peter and Shoals Fly Fishing through his generous contributions to the local fishing/conservation community here on the Seacoast of NH. I was finally lucky enough to get a date booked to go out on his boat with him targeting big striper in June of last year.
His boat setup is pretty simple, a 23 foot Mako with a 225hp Yamaha - and it works well onshire or offshore, enough power to get places fast. She is docked in the impressive Wentworth by the Sea Marina in Newcastle NH, one of the prettiest seaside towns there is. From the marina there is a wonderful view of the NH Coastline and Odiorne Point, and you can even grab lunch there on the docks or up at the restored "grand" hotel. Different business than the marina, but same location essentially
As far as fishing goes, Captain Whelan has been doing this a long time, he knows the patterns and places the fish follow from years of guiding local waters which is key to any charter trip. He had me onto fish in the first few minutes and it became my challenge to place my cast close enough to busting fish to connect - it's not easy fly fishing for Striped Bass.
Luckily there is no fly snobbery on my part, After I landed a couple small schoolies on my own on the fly, I considered myself happy to be so lucky. After getting my flycasting fix on schoolies and busting fish, we decided it was time to target the big fish and headed offshore seeking some live mackerel for bait. Live fishing for bait is pretty fun in and of itself, jigging for macks out in the open water. After throwing a few in the livewell, we were off to chase monster Striper, and Peter put me right onto them where I was able to land a truly respectable fish for starters, then the biggest Striped Bass of my life. What was nice is that we had her in, photos shot, and released off a circle hook unharmed in no time, so she could breed and live another day - even on live bait. That was important to me as I don't like to keep large fish, I prefer to keep mid sized fish if I am going to take any home at all. The catch and release experience was great, my only hope is that someday I can take a fish that big on a fly!
From there we returned to skinny water and chucked the fly at some nice fish close to shore, then called it a day.
What is nice about Peter's setup is that you have some diversity of fishing (inshore, offshore, fly or spinning rod with light tackle or live bait) and the boat is yours to follow your whim or the fish's whim. Peter knows his stuff, and doesn't fool around when it comes to getting to the best fishing at the time, nor does he dictate your fishing style. He is pretty flexible based on what you're looking for.
As a fisherman who has used Peter's services and a regular tripadvisor contributor, I highly recommend this trip - if you can book it. His calendar fills up pretty quickly - so be warned!
I've taken charters on the west coast in Washington and Oregon, in New Mexico, South Carolina, and the islands and Peter is great to work with because it is his operation and he has been doing it longer than anyone else that I know in this area, and his knowledge shows. Not fancy, low frills, but great odds at being lead to fish. The rest is on you!
