If you arrive from high road to Taos you approach the santuario from lower parking lot and you do not readily see El Niño. Yes the santuario is wonderful but be sure to also visit El Niño. A few steps away. Maps show the El Niño chapel and the prayer building beside it.

Even the teenage grandkids found this "amazingly spiritual", and the folk art is wonderful. If you can't take your kids to Europe to see these kinds of special places, then go to Chimayo.

If taking the scenic byway to Taos, you definitely want to take a side trip to Chimayo. It will only take approximately one-half hour to an hour depending on your interest level, but is worth seeing this historic little site.

Heard about the church from my sister in NC and from guests at the B&B my husband & I were staying at. We love visiting Missions and old churches but haven't ever visited shrines. It was a week day and it wasn't crowded. We got there right when Mass was starting, so I was able to attend Mass. The Church's... More

Easter in particular draws hundreds of the faithful to attend Mass and obtain a small quantity of Holy Dirt. Pilgrims from all over make the trek carrying burdensome crosses and other artifacts. The Chimayo area is rich in Hispanic culture not found in other states.

This was very crowded when I was there, and it was just different than I expected. The location was beautiful, it was pretty busy, and there were people filling up plastic bottles and baggies from the dirt that is supposed to have healing powers. I love mission churches and I love places like this typically, but maybe it was just... More

I have been her many times and I have always found the place to be Peaceful and Holy. I have not ever been disappointed nor ceased to be filled with the awe and wonderment every time I go. I can't wait to go back just to take in the scenery and the beautiful Church and holiness of the grounds.

You don't have to be Catholic to be at peace here. There is a calm and a feeling of hope everywhere. The story of the miraculous healings are world renowned. Drive the High Road to Taos and step back in time, quant and unchanging for generations. The religion, the weavings and the food. Talk about a great day!

We like to visit old church or missions and this was one of top that we have seen. I wasn't expecting so much to see. Walk the ground and all the buildings. A lot of history and beautiful little church. If you are in the Santa Fe area, it is worth the 30 minute drive to go see. Nice gift... More
