We visited Horseshoe Lake on our way down from Wheeler Peak. The lake was crystal clear and beautiful. If you can take the altitude (its no joke if you are a flatlander) and have experience hiking, its well with the trip for the views.

Beautiful lake on your way to the top of Wheeler Peak. Beautiful and you can fish in it or you could a few year ago. Nice plce to take a rest on your hike to Wheeler or coming back down

Horseshoe lake is a beautiful lake above the tree line in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of northern New Mexico. It is a difficult hike to get there, but it is worth it. The last time I was there, the "trail" was very rocky and rough. I don't feel like this trail is for beginners. I recommend an ATV.
