We didn’t get out and hike - the temperature was near 100. We did the auto loop tour on an improved gravel road. My husband had a strong zoom lens on his camera and was able to see many birds in high detail. I was...More

The visitor center is not very big. I would have liked to be able to hear the sounds of the migratory birds of this area on a device in the visitor center. Maybe, I missed. The drive around the water area does not allow to...More

drove in on a holiday, so the visitor center was closed, but we walked around, then drove along the road on a tour, looking at the wildlife and waters, cliffs etc.

Home to several species of migratory birds, this lovely area just outside of Roswell is a great place to visit if you want to get a look at some wildlife. In addition to the visitor's center, there's a scenic drive and several hiking trails.

Starting with the great displays at the visitors center, with it's knowledgeable staff, Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is a great place for birding (especially waterfowl and shore birds), Dragonflies, and unique area that attracts and nourishes these forms of life.

If you don't know Roswell, you would not expect to find this marshy area where birds stop over on their migration. The Refuge often has special events like Dragon Fly day, but the big attraction are the birds, Fishing also allowed in some areas.

I would give my time to the Bosque. Although I like Bitter Lake a lot, personally I find the Bosque more picturesque. Enjoy your travel.
