My husband I took a trip to see the snow since we missed it so much from Michigan. The views are amazing and the little restaurant had perfect hot chocolate, but the drive up was terrifying! No one knows how to drive in the snow (a few inches in the road), we saw a mustang stuck in a snow bank,... More

Worth the time to drive up the east side of the Sandia Mountains. You get to go through lots of forest which changes as you get higher. Finally, you get to the crest and can treat yourself to beautiful 360 degree views, including Albuquerque below.

Fantastic to see the ice build on the trees and bushes as you drove higher up the mountain. The views form the top are spectacular. I wouldn't want to drive it when it was snowing, I bet it's pretty treacherous. Well worth the trip, if it had been warmer we might have done one of the hikes, but 20 degrees... More

Getting to the top of Sandia Mountain is a bit of a drive from the city of Albuquerque, but well worth the trip. Spectacular views from the observation area a short walk from the parking area at the end of the Byway.

It will take some time to reach the Sandia Crest because most of the way up the speed limit is 25 mph. The reason being there are multiple hairpin curves before you reach the crest. Once you get to the crest the views are spectacular. On a clear day you can see for 100 miles in every direction. There is... More

My son was visiting from North Carolina and we decided to take the drive up to the crest of the Sandia's and although it was May we were greeted with snow on the ground and in the air. It was quite beautiful, but obviously no visibility to see the city and surrounding vistas.

Forget the expensive ride on the Tram and take the drive up the backside of the mountain. Beautiful drive and lots of wildlife to see. Great cafe and gift shop at the top. Don't forget $3 for parking through the Forestry Service. A wonderful, inexpensive day trip.

The drive takes you to the very top of Sandia Peak at 10,678 feet. The view is fabulous and the wind is too. They have a restaurant and a gift shop at the top. If you happen to be a birder, there are Mountain Bluebirds and other high altitude critters to see. It is best in October when the aspens... More

The good - we saved a ton of money by driving 14 miles to the top. I had been on the tram before, and it can be very time consuming and a bit pricey. To me, the views from the backside of the mountain were a little better. There is a nice gift shop and you can hike over to... More

The tram ride is very nice and gives an opportunity to view the city of Albuquerque and the surrounding Sandia mountains. The ride is about 15 minutes each direction. Worth the time if you like views that seem to go on forever. One caution, make sure that no one in your party has altitude problems/concerns. The change in altitude may... More
