The sights and peace brought by the dessert is worthwhile, even if you are super tired after walking through what feels like never ending sand. The walk is actually not bad and even unfit people will make it. Just talk enough water and sensible shoes (preferably closed shoes and sit down every now and again and empty out the sand).... More

Camped at NWP at Sesriem, you get an hour earlier access to Sossusvlei than surrounding camps. And the sunrise drive does make it worthwhile. Engage 4×4 if you have as soon as you pass the 2x4 parking lot. You will need it. Deadmans vlei at sunrise is unbelievable. Walk the Sesriem canyon. Understand what water does in a desert. Come... Take a moment out of you life to experience the openness and dead silence in Sossuosvlei. Getting here isn't easy, but it's worth the trek once you get there. The colors and sharpness of a very deep blue sky touching red sand is something unexplainably spectacular. The vlei brings not only is thought provoking, but has a sense a calmness... More

What's a site. Who would have thought such a dry, baron, empty place could be so epic. Beautiful enough to be a Windows XP screen saver, the sky cobalt and the dunes deep orange. Big Daddy is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area. This magnificent dune is situated between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and at 325 meters it dwarfs the... More

Got up at 5:30 to line up outside the park gates before they opened at 6am. There was a queue already at 5:45. Drove to the sand dune where the tourist buses stopped. It was very accessible. View from the top was stunning.

Stunning scenery but needs quite a bit of driving on gravel/sand. We went on organised trip from our lodge and I would recommend this way of seeing the area. If you drive then use the shuttle for the last bit - we saw an experienced driver get stuck in the sand so not worth the risk of driving yourself unless... More

Jaw-dropping dunes, brilliant oranges contrasting with blue skies, graceful curves made by shadows, enticing sandy ridges to climb, a photographer's paradise, a hiker's delight, in sauna-like heat after 11:00 am. Plan to arrive as sun rises, stay until noon, and return again to fully explore as drive in on washboard and asphalt roads is long, mainly because you stop so... More

amazing red dunes spread for miles along the valley. Ancient lakes with skeletal trees creating points of interest. Different times of day give different effects. Best to get in early to drive from gate to the main dunes.

Sossusvlei really is beautiful, but there were so many people there, even at sunrise, and that was a bit distracting. Still definitely worth a visit, of course. Just don't expect a fine sunrise to yourself, even in off-season.

You need a full day if not 2 to enjoy this. Camp in the reserve if they have space so you can get early access tot he dunes (before sunrise) Take some water and lunch and head up one of the dunes - Big daddy is a 'tough' hot walk but the views are so worth it. Preferred Big daddy... More
