We saw this place by the side of the road and drove in to see what it was...we saw a gentleman and asked if it were a museum or something. He said it wasn't a museum but an "ecological think tank" where scientists addressed ecological concerns. He said right now, among other things, they are are researching tick borne diseases... More

The Cary Institute is a very serious research facility for the study of the environment. It has several buildings and outdoor areas where research is conducted, so it is not a place to bring your grill and enjoy a cook-out, but it is beautiful and seriously maintained. Great place to go for walks and observe nature.

This place is a local treasure, and the lectures are very enjoyable. We came to the trails for a Fathers' Day picnic.

Hiking trails, science-focussed educational programs, and world renowned authors, scientists, and even artists lecture at the Carey auditorium on a regular basis. Even though I miss their former formal gardens, I respect their mission statement and adherence to ecologically minded programs. Well worth visiting and Supporting!

There is a very good group of courses offered on various topics from landscaping design to plant care. The costs are reasonable and the staff is excellent.
