Oia’s Main Street & Finding the Famous Blue Domes
Nikolaou Nomikou is Oia’s crowded main street and is lined with shops, cafes, galleries, hotels and boutiques. It’s also where you find the path to the Instagram-famous blue domed churches. We had trouble at first finding the spot where everybody goes to get that classic shot. It’s not immediately obvious. When we finally got some directions, it turned out to be very easy. Here’s how we found it. From the Panagia Church, we walked (with the church at our backs), around to our right, towards Nikolaou Nomikos St. As we walked down the main street, we very quickly saw a large white church on our left (the Gold & Silver shop at #49 was on our right). We turned left immediately after the church into a small, narrow path that lead us to a strange door that looked like it could open right onto the cliff edge. From here, we right, to the very popular viewing point for the domes. Had we wanted to get a chance at the prime photo-taking position, we would have had to wait in line. Returning to Nikolaou Nomikou, I found the rest of the street chaotically crowded and we didn't linger long and made our way down to the end of the street to the old castle lookout point.

    Incredible View
The “classic” blue domes of Oia in Santorini. It was very busy when we visited but we were able to get some great photos of the domes and the view. Worth the time invested to visit; walk along the top of the hill as there are some neat shops and you can find other spots to enjoy the view that are less crowded.

    Great view but crowded!
Beautiful view but very crowded, can take 30-35 minutes to get to photo spot . You can go left at fork in road to see the blue domes , this is what we did do to line. The streets are very crowded and have to walk single file through town.

This is the Greek coastline you see in all the Instagram posts. Beautiful blue sea with matching white and blue buildings crammed onto the side of a hill. Postcard perfect you think, until you get there.

This place is one of the most touristy places we've been in the world. Completely overflowing with tourists and all the overpriced hotels, restaurants and shops selling knick knacks. This is made worse by the fact that the pedestrian cobbled streets are so narrow you're all jammed in like sardines and it takes half an hour to walk the distance it should normally take 10 minutes.

Yes, the four buildings with blue domes are pretty, but is that enough? Oh, that's right, there's only four buildings with the blue domes. Feels like a bit of a con when you arrive and you realise that the 1000's of photos you've seen of this place are the exact same buildings taken from different angles and different times of day.

Speaking of time of day, if you want to photograph the buildings you'll need to get there EARLY. Otherwise you'll end up in a shoving match with other tourists who will intentionally block your shot, walk into your shot or take 10 minutes filming themselves walking in front of the scenary for their blog. (Yawn.)

We arrived at 9:30am and were **just** able to view and photograph most viewpoints before all the walking tours, cruise ship passengers and other tourists arrived. And this is during Covid travel. So once travel restrictions continue to lift and more tourists return you will likely need to be there at sunrise in order to have any elbow room.

We had an amazing 3 weeks in Greece but this place was nowhere near top 10. If you're determined to visit make sure you get there very early. Overnight in Oia if you can afford it as bus service to the town in early morning is not possible and taxis are expensive.

I was so looking forward to coming here but it was terribly overcrowded. It was impossible to get to the viewpoints and the queues going in both directions even stopped people walking up and down the street. The coach park was chaotic as well and we had to walk up a busy road and then back down through a vineyard as the path was under repair.

Found the iconic spot for the 3 dome photos. There was a short line of people trying to get the iconic photos on the right side. On the left is a little more spacious. Pretty spot, but there are lots of pretty views here.

A must when you visit Oia. You should see the three bells early because you may have to wait more than an hour to take the picture once the cruise ship passengers hit the island. A sign on the wall says you have only five minutes to take the picture. When we came, there were five people in front of us; when we turned around, there were at least forty people behind us waiting. It is picturesque; however, the pictures you see in magazines are touched up, and it doesn't look that blue. The domes need a good painting, but it's still a must-see.

I would say, that the best time to see this beauty is early morning. Everyone is either eating breakfast or the cruise ships have not docked yet. I went at 8:30 in the morning and since this was close to our accommodations, I was able to reach it in 10 minutes with no one blocking, perfection.

Amazing village of Oia on top of the cliff top and the place for photos of the famous blue domes. The main tourist street is full of gift shops but they are not cheap. Many of the goods you can buy cheaper in the capital Fira (Thira). Well worth visiting.

This is the place where you take the memorable photos from Santorini, and particularly the town of Oia. Given that it is the most photographed area in the village that there’s always a crowd taking pictures from this location. With a little patience, you will be able to get yours as well. However, if you want to get uninterrupted shots to be able to capture all the domes you do need to come in early
