Great place to take kids and dogs.. hiking trails that wrap around the shoreline with spectacular views of Long Island Sound and large open spaces for playing ball, Frisbee, etc.. one of the true dog friendly parks on the North shore

One of my favorite places to visit in Long Island. The preserve is beautiful located right on the sound with crystal clear water. Not only is the landscape stunning but of course the castles are glorious as well with a fountain and garden to match. There are area with benches and tables to enjoy lunch or breakfast and a little... More

Not able to take advantage of the tours as it was Columbus Day. However for only $10 a car you can drive/walk in the gardens and view the buildings. Well worth the entrance fee, just to do this.

Sands point preserve is a beautiful serene experience, with various nature trails and children's trails as well. It is a lovely way to spend the afternoon with children and families. The grounds are spectacular as are the two castles which are open for viewing.

One of the Island's most special place. Must never tell a tourist about it. Used by locals, great with children of all ages and seniors as well as long as you are able to comfortably go on a short hike.

After making a reservation for the 2pm tour we waited at the visitor`s center for the jitney to take us there. To call it a visitors center is a joke as the barren and dirty bathrooms. ....just off a huge grey hall with a couple of vending machines do not make visitors feel welcome or comfortable. We were shocked there... More

Places like this marked the so-called Gold Coast (northern Long Island) back in the days when the very, very rich sought a rural retreat from the stress of Manhattan. Today its architecture and its lovey wooded grounds make for a very pleasant visit. Highly recommended (good for kids, too).
