As a kid I made my parents take me to this splendid arboretum because it really is a grand tree collection. Many rare trees came from Ellwanger and Barry Mt. Hope Nursery of Rochester in the late 1880's and are now glorious living sculptures. I name the fernleaf beech, weeping beech, red buckeye, double-flowered horse-chestnut, and weeping spruce. The photography... More

Last visited in 2015, 30 years after attending college at the adjacent Syracuse University and State College of Environmental Science and Forestry. This was, and remains, a fascinating cemetery. This is because of the historical nature of the monuments as well as the mature forest vegetation (native and exotic species). It seemed that considerably less maintenance takes place today compared... More

This is a cemetery with a lot of history that has been well documented. It is large and shady so if you like this kind of thing take one of the guided tours, the halloween tours are great.

I've been visiting here for years, My family plot is there. I love the architecture of the older monuments and buildings. But sadly, there has been a lot of vandalism in recent decades. I'd like to see a program where juveniles have to do their community service restoring the old monuments and picking the beer cans and garbage. A high... More

This is a nicely maintained cemetery near SU's campus. The green space, including mature trees makes for a nice walk, but avoid going there after dark or alone.

I have come to Oakwood several times for photography shoots of the tombstones and monuments. Very beautiful location. Great for photographers to take some good photos, especially of the pyramid monument. Highly recommended. One tip though, as peaceful as this place is, please do not go there alone. This is in the City of Syracuse and crime is pretty high.... More

Varied paths and interesting sights. I loved to go on walks or runs here while I was a student at SU, especially on fall afternoons.

Can't go wrong. It is a place of contemplation. Some of the tombstones are old and falling apart, but that's all a part of the aging process.

Oakwood cemetery is worth several visits, whether you just enjoy looking at amazing grave markers and crypts, or are interested in the history of Central NY and its founders and notables. I highly recommend the Onondaga Historical Society's "ghost walks", or similar group outings. I would not suggest wandering around the place solo; it is vast, and has many potential... More
