Overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, is Lyndhurst, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. Designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, its architectural brilliance is complemented by the park-like landscape of the estate and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts. Its noteworthy occupants included: former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt, and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. Lyndhurst is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Today, we visited Lyndhurst for the first time and thought it was every bit as lovely as the pictures depict it to be! Nathan, our guide, was extremely informative. We love how enthusiastic he was about the estate and the history behind it. Though we...More

Lyndhurst was beautiful! So glad I went! The furnishings are all original to the families that lived there! Most historic homes have replicas or period appropriate furnishings. First 2 owners moved and left everything, the last owner Anna Gould left house to the state. Our...More

We didn't take the tour but just walking around the grounds was very beautiful and peaceful. The riverwalk is very relaxing. We went to the room where there is a video explaining the history and different owners.

Our guide, Nick, was very informative with a good sense of humor. He explained a lot about the various owners and how the house and grounds were donated. Enjoyed the tour and the collection of dresses and gowns at the end of the tour.

The tour guide was excellent - he was funny, interesting, and clearly showed his passion for the subject. The house itself was interesting and we really enjoyed the tour. The issue was with the people that worked at the visitor centre. We were there from...More

Lyndhurst is a rather uncommon Gothic home from the 19th century, which sets it apart from most other historic homes along the Hudson. The tour is great and takes you through the interesting and beautiful rooms of the house. Plus, photography is allowed inside, which...More

We've been to many of the other Hudson Valley homes and mansions of rich and famous people, but were still quite impressed with this one. It doesn't have quite the scope of Kykuit or Olana but it has its own unique story and features that...More

My wife and I have been doing the gilded age circuit in the Hudson Valley. This castle is not to be missed. The house is stunning and if you have seen "Dark Shadows" or "A Winters Tale" you will recognize the Neo-gothic lines immediately! Our...More

Yes, tickets can be purchased at the castle, but I would strongly suggest purchasing online prior to your visit. I've seen people turned away due to tickets being sold out.
