The site is small but I spent 2 hours with my son (8years) and we both got a great insight into the issue of slavery. Definitely one of the best visits I have had in Pernambuco. A car is needed to get there or take a cab but tours there are free. The place is small so it ‘s really imperative to do a tour, otherwise one misses out and it seems just like a beautiful farmhouse.

More than a mill (though you can still see one old sugar cane press that was powered by slaves), this place is the historic home of Joaquim Nabuco, an important figure in Brazil's abolitionist's movement to end slavery. Entrance is free and a guide will show you around. The explanations (guide and signs) are only in Portuguese though. Joaquim Nabuco lived at this mill, which at that time was ran by his aunt, from when he was 3 months to about 8 years. Americans might be interested to know Joaquim also became the first ambassador from Brazil to the United States. The mill is certainly worth a visit if you are looking for a short adventure away from the beach. It is about a half-hour drive from Porto das Galinhas. (Note that this same attraction is also listed as the "Engenho Massangana" for Cabo de Santo Agostinho (where it is actually located).

If you are traveling between recife and porto de galinhas you can do a stop here. It is a well preserved farm, however quite small, there is the main house and the chapel. It is well taken care of, with very friendly guide to show you around and tell stories. There are two old baobab trees in the property and the historic value comes from the fact that joaquim nabuco lived here in his youth.
Lots of government employees around, not sure what they do the whole day as there are not that many tourists.
