In Mid-March we did a Family Spring Break vacation with our teen boys. Great fun for the 4 of us as they are nearly adults themselves as we played in a huge bucket of dirt hunting for gems. Erin who was also our barrister for the best chai latte I've had in some time was also our guide to the... More

Actually, we found quite a few. The staff was friendly and made recommendations as to size of bucket to work with for our group. If you haven't done this, it's like panning for gold. They sell you a bucket of NC dirt that you pour into a screen bottom box and then you let water from the sluice flow over... More

58 yr old child enjoyed panning for some gems. Staff goes through what you found and describes each item and stone. Kids would have a blast, as well as adults.

Rick not only showed us the type of rock/gems we pan for but he gave us some knowledge of each stone. He took time with us and show us the final cut of several gems. It was an education for all of us!!!

Our 3 year old and 7 year old daughters LOVED this! We got one medium bucket for them to share, and they had a blast finding gems. We loved learning about what they found afterwards -- educational and fun!

We purchased a large bucket and had a great time screening our gems. The staff helped us identify the gems. We selected one for cutting and cannot wait to see the results. We are planning another gem mining trip soon! Our only complaint was that they were quite busy and our son had to wait over 20 minutes to make... More

Just stop by to get some stuff for my husband and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. They gave me a few charts for my husband and other pointers. Was very pleased with my visit and hope to go back this year with my husband so he can 'mine'.

Doc's is a cool place and the people are so nice! Gem mining is a not very well known attraction in NC but I highly recommend if you're in the mountains find a place, (Doc's is a great one!) and try it out. We stumbled across this activity years ago when our children were young and we couldn't believe the... More

We went here to go gem mining as a family(group of 7). I called ahead because it was 45 minutes until closing and I was told we would be would still be able to go mining. Upon arriving we were greeted my a nice older lady who asked what we were interested in. When we told her we wanted to... More

Stopped here at the request of my youngest child and was pleasantly surprised. Having four kids, I've stopped at many of these places over the years from the east coast to Colorado/New Mexico and this one did the best job helping to identify our finds and explain the differences between them. The staff consisted mostly of geology students from the... More
