This little park is nice, quiet, beautiful and peaceful.....but if you are using an RV to camp here stay clear of site #1. It's a nice large site but the driveway to get into it is narrow because of a very large tree. The worst part are the tree's roots which are in the driveway and near impossible to back... More

I visited the park for the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count on December 27, 2016. Even though I'm a native and lifelong resident of North Carolina, I had not visited this park or Lake Phelps before. I was very impressed with the diversity of wildlife and birds, in particular. Our group counted about 65 different bird species. The highlight was... More

We camped here for 3 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. A beautiful, peaceful, quiet place for people who love nature as we do. The campground is small and basic with no hookups but the bathroom is super clean with nice hot showers. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Located right on Lake Phelps in a beautiful old growth forest of... More

I feel like it was hard to find the information I needed to visit this park. We did have a picnic here after visiting the Somerset plantation. We were hoping to be able to swim, paddle boat, canoe or kayak but options were very limited. We were told to drive around the lake to kayak rental. When we arrived there... More

If you park at the park office, and walk past all the picnic tables, there is a very nice boardwalk to your left. Off this boardwalk, is a short boardwalk to a dock with 2 benches and ladders to go down into the shallow, clear water with a sandy bottom to swim! If you follow boardwalk to the end, you... More

I was only there for a few moments, but didn't see anything other than a boat ramp. I did see a camping area and some picnic tables, but that was pretty much all.

On a road trip and stopped here for picnic. Park is small but the staff are friendly. Lots of picnic tables with a shelter and water. Short walk to Phelps Lake which is the second largest natural lake in NC. Saw lots of turtles and fish, Checked out the camp grounds. The family camp ground is small but nice. Good... More

Very small campground. Well maintained. This campground has no water, electric, or sewer hookups. There are water spigots to use. Bathrooms have clean showers. Just a very short wide groomed walking trail to Sumerset Plantation. This is worth the guided tour of buildings and homestead. The tour guide was very knowledgeable describing the history of the area. We stayed four days... More

We came here to look for a geocache that is part of a Civil War Series. There were only a couple hours of daylight left when we arrived, so we didn't get to spend as much time exploring as I would have liked. I'm not a fan of snakes, so I am very glad we came here in the winter!... More

A really good place for wildlife. Beautiful lake, great for sunsets. Well kept trails for hiking and biking as well. Pit restrooms at the overlooks.
