The gorge and falls is fantastic but unless you take a wilderness hike you cant really get up close. The highway winds around the gorge and there are several pull offs in which you can stop and enjoy the falls below. We did hike down...More

All the roads leading into Highlands are scenic but this one is especially appealing due to the number of waterfalls and attractions you pass on your way up to Highlands from Franklin, NC. As you near Highlands, you will pass the Jackson Hole gift shop...More

Unless you're taking a hike, it's hard to see. It's a pretty gorge, but nothing spectacular. Take a pass and keep on driving up the mountain to Highlands.

There is a fairly large waterfall about 8 miles from Highlands. If traveling from Highlands, go past the pull off and find a safe place to turn around. You can see the falls from the turnoff. The road follows the gorge all the way to...More

This gorge is along an 18-mile stretch of Hwy 64 between Franklin and Highlands and is just beautiful, makes for a very scenic drive through the woods in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Not to be missed if you are in the area. Just drive slowly,...More

I read alot about this gorge and the complexity of building the road through it. We were thrilled to drive it a couple times during our stay near Highlands. I suggest driving on a sunny midday in the Fall. Stop at the area where you...More

This part of US64/Moonshiner 28 is one of our favorite motorcycle roads. We enjoy it best riding it from Franklin to Highlands, since you are facing the water at all times. There are a few pullouts and we usually stop at all of them. Make...More

Our son climbed the rope and jumped into the water. It seemed like a nice place to play in the water (a little cold for us). Worth the stop. Right off the road, no hiking.

Only one small view through the trees from the road. No trail down. We were disappointed that we couldn't get to the falls.

Most trails allow dogs, if they don't there usually are signs. It's best to buy trail maps at area outdoor stores. Just make sure you clean up after your dog.
I plan to stay at "Mitchell's Lodge & Cottages " at 264 Dillard Rd, Highlands, NC 28741. Can someone please suggest a driving route from the hotel to the waterfall? Not sure about the waterfall location. Thanks.

Just follow the road to Franklin, NC. There will be a pull off spot on the left down the road a ways. Be very careful as the road is narrow and curvy.
