We were there this past weekend and really enjoyed the park. We saw the river. People coming in from canoeing and they had a great presentation by Ranger Doug that was about the American Woodcock. Ranger Doug was awesome! He was very informative about not only the American Woodcock but the other animals in the park as well as the... More

We were surprised to find we were the only people camping in this park. We only found the campground after the lady in Sparta tourist information office gave us directions and rang ahead to check It was open. It appears there are very few campgrounds in the area - we had been looking for 2 hours and the only one... More

Very clean "drive to" campsites and restrooms. Sites are close to one another, but placed strategically so that there is privacy between them. US 221 is near the campground with minimal traffic and disturbance. Very well maintained.

Based on the reviews I may be following James G around. North Carolina is blessed with many great State Parks and this is one of them. The visitor's center has a great exhibit on the river and how to protect it. Thank God the local people stepped up and persuaded the Federal government to protect the New River. The trail... More

My family stopped in on our NC State Parks Tour, and hung out on the river today. It was so quiet and peaceful we just got lost in ourselves. This is a great place to visit, and camp.

This was our first time at the campground, and we will definitely be back! We camped at the Wagoner Rd access (walk in sites) in site 47. We had two other sets of couples that camped next to us in sites 46 and 45. Sites 46 and 47 were both very large with flat areas for your tents and even... More

I live near the state park and I love the hiking areas here. Located in the Ashe County area of North Carolina, this park has wonderful views of the River, lovely mountain views, wonderful tours by the park rangers that everyone even kids would love.

Stayed at the "drive-to" campground a few days ago. This has 20 RV/tenting sites--half of them have electric, water, and sewer and half have only electric so make sure you know what you are signing up for when you make your reservation. The website is pretty clear on that, but some people still seem to miss it. But for $23... More
