We went here a few times we enjoyed it so much. The first time we took a hike up the trails and watched others tubing down and playing in the water. The river is quick when it has rained so be careful. A 12 yr old girl floated by by accident and it took a while to find her. The next time we came we brought tubes, I recommend real tubes not the floaties we bought. We flipped right out and had lots of excitement. We had fun watching the agriculture workers complete their monthly stock the waters with trout.

Great area to visit. Getting to the falls is a little tricky and you have to follow the road without much signage. The hike is not difficult as we had a 7 and 10 year old with us without any problems. It can be dangerous if wet so do not visit during or after rain. Really beautiful spot.

Take your kids, your suits and some inner-tubes for a great day. Kids can float probably 500 yards and easily walk back. They have picnic area and I think a charcoal grill. Great hill hike too up above the river.

Fires Creek Falls is right across from a recreation area. The falls were beautiful and you can walk right up to them if you take your shoes off. There is also a little pool and a rushing stream at the bottom of the falls where you can relax and tube. I highly recommend this area!

On our only full day in Murphy, my Mom wanted to go to a waterfall elsewhere, but due to bad GPS directions and poorly-maintained roads, that idea was scrapped. So, we went to this place instead, easier to get to with roads that aren't horrible. It's a nice set of waterfalls you could see from your car in the lot. Of course, it's better to get close and take some pics or videos. Also feels good to get wet when the summer heat and humidity is heavy.

I have been to this place several times. Summer is great for jumping in the water or even putting a tube in and floating a bit. It's cold but nc is HOT in summer. Hiking trails are good but not well marked. Get your map before getting here because no cell service.

This is one of my favorite areas when we visit Murphy, NC. There's a nice easy walk along the creek. We always bring sandwiches for a picnic lunch. The falls are nice but hard to totally see unless you are in the creek - nice swimming hole

The creek is beautiful, clean, and a great way to cool off in the heat of summer. The falls are accessible by crossing the creek. I reccommend bringing na inner tube to float down the creek and enjoy the water that much more. The recreation area is clean and has a lot of picnic table with grills. There are trails across the bridge for hiking or biking. You could make a day of it or spend a short time. It's easy to find with ample parking.

Was right down the road from us in Hayesville, easy to find and plenty of trails to choose from. Loop around the waterfall for a bit more of a challenge, lope around the paved trails for easier fun. Great fun for our dog, very pretty area and not many crowds. Play in the water, pics by the bridge!

Directions from Murphy: about 9 miles out on Hwy 64 towards Haynesville. Turn left by gas station onto Fires Creek Rd, go about 5 miles till you reach a sign for Fires Creek Recreation area. Turn left, drive until fork in road where small signpost says "Leatherwood" (bear left) this takes you to parking area. You can see the waterfall from the parking lot. To hike to the top, hike across the bridge and follow the trail. Nice hike, nice picnic areas. Worth the trip!

Yes, just to confirm that the falls are at the parking lot. There are trails you can hike to get closer to the falls, and of course in warm weather you can get in the water.

How does the tubing work? Will we need to worry about where we've parked or is it easy to walk back to? how long is the tubing trail?
Written 26 August 2020
You bring your own tubes, and the creek is a very short walk from the parking lot. Depending on the level of the water, the tubing may be short or long. It's not a long tube ride, but can be done over and over most enjoyably.

Is it a hike to even see the falls? I see people say it's a hike to get to top of fas but we just want to enjoy the scenery. We will have our 3 year old and are deciding if we want to buy a carry pack for him (backpack thing where my husband can carry him). If we can find easy "hikes" to view falls and rivers we will just go that route and not do big hikes til he's a little older. Don't know if those options are around Murphy? Will be first time there. Thank you!!

Hi, Are small leashed dogs allowed if I pick up?how long a hike is it? Is part. Of it shaded?
Written 25 April 2016
Yes you can bring your dog as long as it's on a leash. There is plenty of shade even have picnic tables if you want to stop and have lunch and your baby can sit under the table and snatch fallings. What is the physical address?
Written 4 October 2015

North Carolina Mountains, North Carolina
I'm not sure of the address but the location on the map on this site is not correct. Leatherwood Falls is in the Fires Creek Recreation area is not in Murphy or even Cherokee County. It is off of Fires Creek Road in Clay County, NC, closer to Hayesville, NC. From Wikipedia: Fires Creek is a recreational area located in the Nantahala National Forest in Clay County, North Carolina. It takes its name from Fires Creek, which runs through it.

I have a 3 and 7 year old and we will be visiting mid november. Would this be child friendly to hike to the falls?
Written 17 September 2015
I would not think so. It didn't look easy at all so I didn't try it.
Written 18 September 2015
There is no fee. It is free. Has a small picnic area as well

Is there an actual address we can put in our Tom Tom?
Written 20 August 2015
It is a State Park so if you put in Fire creek Falls in Hayesville, N. C. The directions will appear. Once you turn off the main road do not think you are lost, it is a long two lane paved road. Do watch for the sign to turn and after that you still have a little ways to go. The scenery is beautiful. I used a Garmin not sure about the Tom Tom. Directions will also come up on your phone. Hayesville is small so anyone you ask will know where it is. You will not be sorry you went.
Fires Creek is a Nantahala National Forest Recreation Area. (not a state park) Google the Nantahala National Forest for more information. The directions given by AWF98 are correct
