My boyfriend and I took a day trip to complete this hike. Easy parking and well laid out base of the trail. The trail doesn't have heavy traffic, but is quite a strenuous hike. It was about 12 miles total, round trip. Very large gain of elevation through the hike, a few water crossings (you can get across without getting... More

We did not actually go up Cold Mountain; however, you can get a pretty view of the mountain (and it's marked) by driving up to the top on the way to Pisgah Inn or Cradle of Forestry. Pretty view.

About a 5-mile hike one way from parking area at Daniel Boone Scout Camp to peak of Cold Mountain. The hike is beautiful and uncrowded. The hike is moderately tough though. A fair amount of elevation gain, narrow trail with lots of rocks and roots. When covered with fall leaves it makes for the need to be careful with footing.... More

Cold Mountain is a beautiful area. We decided to go on a joy ride and ended up at Cold Mountain. Can't wait to go back when the leaves are changing!

Shining Rock wilderness is really great for a day hike, but in my experience, it can be a bit tough to get the best camping spots for backpacking on crowded weekends. I think that the spur from the Blue Ridge Parkway up over Black Balsam Knob makes a great day hike with unparalleled exposed views. My favorite in the region.

Park at Black Balsam parking area just of the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 420. Lots of other ways to reach Cold Mountain i.e. off NC 215 at the Daniel Boone Boy Scout camp but harder to find... or you could ford the Pigeon river and bushwhack up the mountain. Been there done that but not for the faint-hearted or... More

We just stayed at Camp Daniel Boone Boyscout Camp on Cold Mountain and couldn't be happier. Beautiful scenery and a river for fishing. The weather was cool in the 70s and the water a chilly 60 degrees. They have a lot of high adventure things to do in the National Forest. Pack your lunch because there are no stores or... More

Cold Mountain has gained attention from the book & movie. When you've lived in Western NC, as I have, and traveled along the parkway ... you realize that it is one of many nice peaks. Personally, I think the view from Mt. Pisgah IS much better -- Mt. Mitchell, too!
