I love this thing. I'm not sure why. Maybe b/c we drop it @ New Year's. Maybe b/c it's a giant nut. Maybe b/c it's so very Raleigh. It's in Moore Square, which is a great little park surrounded by places to eat and drink....More

I just don't get it. What's the big deal about a giant acorn sitting in a park that caters to the homeless of Raleigh? It doesn't distribute food, clothing, shelter, medical care...nothing. It's an acorn for God's sake! Just an acorn.

Honestly, this place is rather a dump, and looked to even be slightly dangerous as we drove around it looking for the acorn. The acorn is no longer in Moore Square. Moore Square is a lie. If you're looking for the giant Raleigh acorn, head...More

The acorn is no longer in Moore Square... Moore Square looks like a dump... Nothing worth seeing here... Go a few blocks down the street to Nash Square instead.

It is an acorn. In a poorly-maintained city park. With homeless folks milling about. Did I mention the acorn?

Nuts about this spot. Raleigh is the "City of Oaks". Acorns come from oaks. Good photo op. Nuff said.

Yes, it drops out of the sky every new years, but I suppose because its so approachable, so close to the ground, when I see it in Moore Square it always gives me a little happy smile. Hometown pride (or adopted hometown, anyway) has to...More

Not a must see, but a fond favorite of locals as it is our New Year's "ball drop". Now located in Plaza in front of Fletcher theater in Duke Power Memorial Auditorium at the bottom of Fayetteville Street
