The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

My son loves the zoo. We always walk around look at the animals, then play on the playground, ride the train, get some snacks, then play on the playground again. We love it there.

I really enjoy visiting this zoo. There is a mixture of native and non native animals with great exhibits. I love taking kids here for the learning opportunities that are provided. I recommend the Dakota Zoo to anyone.

I take my grandkids to the Bismarck Zoo every year. The walking paths are enjoyable. Wish there were a few more big animals. But I can sit and watch the big cats for hours.

We ended up in Bismarck a few extra days as our car died and needed something to kill time so we went to the zoo. It was a very manageable zoo to walk and we spent an hour and half there. Delightful!

I haven't been to a zoo in years and then I went to Bismarck not sure what to expect. I was blown away by the time I got through the gate! Very informative and fun! They have concessions and water throughout the zoo.
