The driving tour of the refuge was interesting. We had the place pretty much to ourselves, so we could stop to see birds whenever they appeared. The drive is nearly nine miles long on a dirt road, so go prepared to take some time doing...More

I went here on September 16, 2016 and saw some bison in the far. It was lightly raining when I was there and the dirt/gravel road made a mess of the car. Did not see flocks of birds or anything else and would not recommend...More

The 8 mile loop is definitely worth the drive, we saw 3 American Bittern in flight, western kingbirds, golden eye ducks, sharp railed grouse as well as avocet. Incredible place to visit if you are a birder.

A beautiful oasis of nature on the N. Dakota prairie. There's a 1-mile trail through various types of vegetation, and a 7-mile drive with stops along the way (get a guide brochure at the visitor center). Bring your binoculars. We saw lots of birds, but...More

Check this out in spring and fall for wildlife viewing and photography. Waterfowl, deer, shorebirds (including the piping plover if you are lucky), upland birds, and more. Catching the migration is key.
