About
A first of it’s kind in Penang, the school is custom-made with individual purpose-built workstations that allows for a memorable hands-on cooking experience. As classes are limited to 10 persons, chefs are able to provide a personalised approach. Though the menus follow authentic and traditional methods they are taught in such a way that you are able to recreate the delicious dishes at home.

My partner and I have done cookery classes in Istanbul and Barcelona so wanted to do one in Penang while here visiting his dad. After research, he picked Tropical Spice Garden and we weren’t disappointed. Beatrice, our eco friendly guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable about all the variety of plants and spices in the abundant garden. We spent about an hour with her and then were shown to the cookery school that is in the grounds.
Jamie (without the Oliver) is very friendly. She’s got a masters in politics from Reading University so understands British sense of humour!
We each had a cooking station so were able to all make our own lunch - unlike other places where you make part of a bigger meal. She was always on hand with tips and encouragement and very knowledgeable too.
We all sat down at the end and ate the meals we had prepared.
She changes the menu every week so you get a variety of dishes. I would highly recommend it if you want to find out more about Malaysian food - which is very much part of life here.

One of the best cooking classes ever. I've taken a lot of cooking classes in many countries in my life, and I must say that this one was really well organised. Each participant has their own cooking station so that you don't miss out on any of the fun.
I learnt how to make nasi lemak with rendang curry - a dish I'd been wanting to learn for a long time - from scratch. The original recipe called for chicken, fish and eggs, but the chef was able to veganize it for me, using tofu and tempeh instead. For dessert I learnt to make onde onde, glutinous rice balls rolled in shredded coconut. The food was absolutely delicious.
Thanks to Chef Rohana for her enthusiasm and for making the class fun. Thanks also and to the kitchen staff who helped between stages and kept us hydrated.
A truly enjoyable experience, highly recommended!

We had heard good reports of the Malaysian cooking class at the tropical spice gardens, combined with a tour of the gardens. The tour of the gardens was certainly worthwhile - very informative and our guides English was very clear.
The cookery class was quite formal in the way we each had our own cooking station and the ingredients had been measured out for us beforehand. The young lady (she said everyone knows her as Jamie) was amusing and informative. She demonstrated then walked around giving help. A fairly pricey trip but we thought it was worth it.

Firstly the lady was incredibly nice and very kind.
It was disappointing however that there was no real link between the spices in the garden and those used in the cooking. We both came away feeling disappointed and underwhelmed by the experience. We have had lessons before in Asia and usually could not wait to try the recipes at home. I don’t think we will be using the recipes again in a hurry. It was also one of the most expensive we have done in Asia. Such a shame as the ladies working there were so so nice.

My Fiancé and I had an awesome time at the gardens! We were toured around by Danny who was both informative and hilarious. The cooking class was a lot of fun and easy to do for people of all culinary abilities. Eating the food you made yourself at the end was the highlight for us. We lucked out and had a great great crew with a few ladies from Australia and a Japanese couple. Having a meal with them and chatting with people from around the world was an extra bonus. Highly recommend for anyone.

After walking around the spice garden we then have the wonderful experience of participating in a lunchtime cooking class which was a great experience. The guides who led the class were very helpful.

Our trip started with a tour of the Spice Garden which took about an hour. It was interesting but if there was a later start and it wasn’t included you wouldn’t miss it. The cooking school is great. It’s set in a separate building at the top of the garden and very well taught by Jamie. We made chicken rendang, an anchovie sambal and a tapioca and coconut dessert cooked in banana leaf. Needless to say you get to eat the fruits of your labor which made for a fun and ‘filling’ day!

Started our cooking class with a tour of the spice gardens. Our guide 'Tummy' was very knowledgeable and friendly, and we had a really interesting walk around the gardens - who knew there were so many different types of ginger! The cooking class was also great fun, and I'll definitely be recreating the recipes at home. Sat down to eat what we'd cooked surrounded by monkeys, which rounded off a perfect morning. Would definitely recommend.

What a great afternoon! We started with a tour of the gardens looking at the different spices and exotic plants that were growing there and with a background combining the history, food and cultural heritage that had been introduced by the Chinese, Malay, Indian and British settlers to the island. Our guide was knowledgable, culturally sensitive and was able to “read” the people in the group and answered all our questions in an entertaining and inclusive way that showed that she had good background knowledge of spices used around the world.

The cooking class was excellent. Jamie and her assistant, Sheila, were so patient and gave great explanation of cooking techniques and the spices and flavors used in Malay cooking. Loved the food and really enjoyed the interaction with Jamie who shared her knowledge so generously. We had three very tasty dishes that I will be able to reproduce at home. Couldn’t fault the afternoon experience, it was a very classy presentation. Sincere thanks for a fun time.

My wife and I like to do things like a cooking schools to learn about different combinations of flavours and foods, we did this one for the same reason....but didn’t really get much from it.
The staff were great but it was a very transactional experience where we just kept throwing the next pre-prepared ingredient into the pan. There was nothing in the way of ‘education’ about the spices and the whole experience was less than inspiring. The meal we cooked was also quite bland and lacked any real impact either visually or in regards to taste.
You may have a better experience but we have done much better cooking schools elsewhere.
