This museum is located in a classic, preserved courthouse. The beautifully restored courtroom is like something out of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. You can just imagine the tense small-town murder trials there. Look for the animal figures hidden in the hand painted wood grain. There are some good local history exhibits and a nationally sponsored exhibit on the New England Planters, the settlers who took up the land the Acadians were forced to leave. Makes a good compliment to the Grand Pre museum. Some very friendly volunteers staff a genealogical room in the basement. Don’t expect any hi-tech exhibits but there are a few neat hands-on displays. There are some steep, but wide, stairs. A ramp provides wheelchair accessibility but wheelchair users might not be able to get to all floors.

If you are starting a visit to the Annapolis Valley this is a good place to start with. The museum has a display in several rooms of an old courthouse that display the history of this valley. The displays will allow you to put many of the things you will see as a tourist into a historical context as you travel. There are some great artifacts on display. Of special interest is a display on the New England Planters - a group of about 8000 New England (mostly from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts) colonists that settled the area between 1760 and 1768. If you are from that area or had ancestors from that area, then a visit to the genealogy center on the lower floor is worth a visit. The center has an excellent collect of records and many family histories are readily available. If you are genealogy researcher a visit to the center is a must do. The staff are extremely helpful and ready to answer questions.

This museum once the local court house hosts some very interesting collections such as Nova Scotia glass and a New England Planters exhibit as well as other displays. If your lucky enough to be there when volunteer Maynard Stevens is around to give a talk your in for some interesting stories about the building or ask him about the surrounding areas as he is a wealth of information. There is a different display every few months in one of the rooms so it well worth a visit anytime during their open season. Check out their website for more information (Opening in April each year and closed during the winter months). The building has a small gift shop with books about local history & families as well as other gift ideas. If your researching your family connection in Kings County this is a great place to start. For a small fee of $5.00 there are lots of resource materials available including published and unpublished family trees as well as community histories, cemetery indexes, etc. Be prepared to spend the whole day researching your family connection the the area. Definitely a place to visit for any history buff and there are also things for the children in the family to do as well, such as finding the hidden images in the courtrooms wood walls. A must see if in the town of Kentville, Nova Scotia.

This is always a must stop for me each time we visit the area. There is always a changing display on that deals with local history plus there is the usual exhibit of local items of historical importance. The staff here are amazing and helpful. They are very knowledgeable about the area and will answer questions you have relating to the history of the valley. In addition their genealogy center is excellent with fully developed family histories for many of the settler families. If you have Nova Scotia Planter ancestors they will provide you with a certificate when you have your family connections completed.

We always stop here when we are in town. The museum offers displays that reflect the local history. They have a good display of artifacts and usually have a feature exhibit. The museum is free and there is usually someone around to answer questions. If you have any ancestors from the area make sure to visit the genealogy center in the basement (small charge for researching). They have original records for Kings County as well as files that have been donated outlining complete family histories. This is a must stop for local genealogy researchers.
