This museum is well worth the stop. It has some of the best examples of Quebec wood carving that I have seen. There is a video introduction that is useful. Wood carving is an old Quebec tradition and this museum shows this art very well. Lots of items to see. There is also an excellent gift shop next door with... More

I just never realized. This museum starts your tour with film of an artist sculpting in wood. The finished piece sits beside the screen so you can compare his technique/progress with the outcome. It's really interesting. From there is a self-guided tour with a tour book loaned by the museum. You move at your own pace. There are some really... More

We had the most wonderful afternoon exploring the Musee de Anciens Canadiens in August! The sculpture museum was filled with beautiful carvings, sculptures and creations that took our breath away! We had the honor of talking with and watching one of the sculptors at work. We learned about the history of carving, and were so impressed by the art that... More

This was such a treat, as both my wife and I are amateur carvers. The works on display here are truly magnificent! Well worth the price of admission! The ladies in the boutique were very pleasant, and really made an effort for us non French speaking Ontarians....thanks, ladies, we really enjoyed chatting with you both! If you have any interest... We really wanted to get going on our long drive that day but decided to give this museum a look and we are glad we did. Very amazing what can be done with wood. It takes at least 40 minutes to see all the displays. We skipped the 20 minute intro video. $8 entry but worth it.

The Museum was so well done and the store boasts the works of many area artists! From carvings, to jewellery, small gifts! Beautifully displayed and the people working that day were so friendly! It was a lovely stop, plus a cafe! Bought some beautifully crafted glass earrings ! A great tour, lovely sitting area outside! Other items to view!

After the packed Old town of Quebec, it is nice to get out to see the real Quebec. The Musee des Anciens Canadiens in St Jean Port Joli on the south shore showcases Quebec's ancient woodcarving tradition. basically a store with a museum of REALLY LARGE carvings (prime ministers, animals, heroes, etc). a little heavy on the sales pitches but... The museum offers a glimpse into the history of woodcarving in Quebec. Take the time to observe and talk with the on-site wood carver. Entrance to only the gift shop is free.
