There are several routes. We chose the route from Patterdale Hotel, through Glenamara Park to Thornhow end and the NE ridge, we descended over Birks and Arnison Crag. It was a fairly straight forward route on reasonable paths, stepped on the steep ascent. It was a comfortable walk for us (we're getting on a bit!) and we really enjoyed it.... More

Great walk up to faurfield and then down over St Sunday Crag, lovely views of helvelyn and striding edge, but so much quieter, saw a handful of people.

Helvelyn gets all the attention because it's higher and has Striding Edge but I think this is the better hike because you can see both sides off the ridge and you also get to look any Helvelyn if it's not surrounded by clouds. The view from the top is like being in a helicopter -- spectacular.

Completed this on 18th August, beautiful day and views to die for all round. Tough trek for three overweight middle age guys, but take your time and it's worth it. Magnificent views of Ullswater, Grisedale Tarn and Hellvellyn. Took us about 7 hours (taking it easy) but well worth it.

A long climb up here after first walking up to Grisedale Tarn but well worth it for the views. A good high level alternative to the scarier Striding Edge !

Go from Patterdale up to Grizedale Tarn, turn left and up and back round down to Brotherswater for a good walk with great views.

Took this hill as part of the last leg of a horseshoe around Helvellyn. In cloud, strong wind and driving rain so sadly no views 😏 However, below the cloud at Birks the views were great so will need to return.

We walked over from Grassmere and descended from the mist on St Sunday Crag to a fantastic view of Ullswater. Wonderful.
