Nestled in the Sussex countryside with views across the High Weald, James and Margaret Beale chose an idyllic location to build their rural retreat. Designed by Philip Webb, Standen is one of the most complete examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship, with Morris & Co. interiors and a story of family life in 1925. Outside, Mrs Beales passion for gardening inspires a major restoration of her 12-acre hillside garden. Each garden room has a distinct character and offers something for every season from spring bulbs to autumn colour. Explore the wider estate with footpaths leading out into the woodlands. Close at 4pm November - January

Spring is the best time to go, when the tulips are in full bloom. The house is sufficiently interesting for a repeat visit or two. The gardens are not the most extensive, yet they are charming enough. There is a good little café for afternoon...More

Beautiful house in the highs arts and crafts style with all the accompanying features including fabulous ceramics from the period. Even on a busy summer Saturday, the place did not feel crowded and it has a very calming atmosphere

On a sunny/dry day you could spend most of the day there. House is small but beautiful but the grounds are large with walks and ideal for a picnic. Hope that helps 😊
