Home to the largest single collection of free flying birds in Australia (some 500 of them!), Birdworld Kuranda in the Australian highlands of the Atherton Tablelands displays no less than 75 species of the most spectacular birds from all corners of the planet - as well as from the earth’s fast diminishing rainforests.Visitors are free to wander through the lush, tropically landscaped bird sanctuary to observe the birds in their own specific - yet natural - habitats. Two lakes connected by a tumbling waterfall for example are home to waterbirds such as stilts, herons and Australia’s own unique Black Swan. In Birdworld's rainforest canopy overhead, blue, gold and scarlet Macaws dazzle with colourful brilliance as they soar above the tree tops. One outstanding Birdworld denizen not to be missed is that rare avian giant, the Cassowary - an Australian bird now officially enlisted as endangered.Designed to "create a centre where birds would be showcased in their natural environment without the barriers of cages coming between them and their admiring public", Birdworld Kuranda is a photographer's paradise. (And without those barriers, visitors often find a feathered friend nestling on their shoulder - a golden photo opportunity!) Birdworld Kuranda can provide guided tours for all group bookings.

Not a huge area but so many birds ! They are really tame and it was heaps of fun to feed them. Some happily sat on our shoulders. If there wasn't so much food available to the birds inside the aviary it might have been...More

We had Birdworld included in our train package off the Kuranda railway and were not disappointed. It's not a lengthy attraction by any means but the length of time you spend depends on how much birdseed you have and how piggy the birds are! The...More

They have quite the variety in this fairly small place plus a Cassowary . It's very noisy with all the bird noise but they have some absolutely beautiful birds. You can buy bird food for $3 so they'll come and feed off your hand. One...More

Thanks for your sharing your personal experience Frances. I think the tip is if you wear something shiny, don't complain if the birds decide to tinker with it! I've noted your comments about the shelter area as we've just put brand new tiles down.

From the minute you walk into this large aviary you are surrounded by friendly and colourful birds, who are not afraid to hop up onto your hand to have a bite to eat from your goody bag, the lorikeets are delightful, I got a photo...More

Loved seeing the birds here, the variety and colours were great. The macaws were really colourful. Specially enjoyed seeing Jack (a bird) on my sister's shoulder and then having him on mine. The enclosure was so natural for the birds and clean. I got to...More

Some great tips there for travellers. For the record, I failed to follow our own advice and had my lovely necklace 'nipped' too on a quick 5 minute visit to inspect our new Finch aviary, so its now off for repairs. Even the owners can...More

This is a great place to get close to both some Australian birds and variety of others from around the world. The parrots are particularly tame, but there are some interesting other birds around, if you look carefully. About half the species are Australian, and...More
