The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep ravines and picuresque waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. This famous railway winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of tropical North Queensland

We took the train back from Kuranda after arriving there via the Skyrail cable car. What a great decision to come back via train. It truly was a special trip on an old train with character. Everything was great from the commentary along the way, the availability of water and toilets, the view, the beautiful water fall, and the slowness... More

This train ride takes you back a hundred years and gives you a bit of an insight on the lives of the pioneers in this location. The landscape is beautiful and the train seems to "cut" through the hills. It can get a bit hot in the summer though. All in all it should be a part of your Kuranda... More

After visiting Kuranda via the Skyrail cable car as part of my Cairns City Stay tour with AAT Kings this was a great way to end the day. It wasn't that busy in Feb so passengers could spread out - I don't think it would have been so enjoyable on a full train as four people to a bench seat... More

I'm not a railway buff but throughly enjoyed the journey from Kuranda back down the hill to Cairns. The carriages are a blast from the past as are the engines pulling them. The history behind this railway is quite unbelievable. So recommend

Great way to get to Kuranda. We went up by train and down by the Skyrail. The train ride was enjoyable with interesting information on the build of the railway along the way.

The railway itself is a slow rail trip that gives you some wonderful views on the way up. We went in autumn I imagine it would be terribly hot in the summer. Kuranda was a little touristy. The skyway to come down was amazing. Be sure to get off and wander about at both stops.
