Markko was started in 1968 by Arnie Esterer and the late Tim Hubbard. With guidance from Dr. Konstantin Frank in New York, the partners began to grow vinifera grapes. Marrko was among the pioneers in growing vinifera grapes along Lake Erie. They wanted to put their resources into growing the well-known vinifera grapes Riesling and Chardonnay. The original vision was... More

If your are interested in great Ohio wines you can't find a better winery, the facility is not fancy but the wines are top notched. Notice most of the negative comments are about location or building, drink the wine and then decide. If you are impressed by facilities try Larrentia, great buildings immature wines.

I love this place and stop anytime I am in the area. This a working winery that produces some of the best wine anywhere. Arnie is a gracious host and a trove of wine knowledge. I've visited Sonoma, Napa, Rhine, Alsace, the winery does NOT resemble Domain Chandon. I've enjoyed reading the negative reviews; yes, there are dogs; loveable Briards... More

Markko Winery originated in 1968 and it has made fine Dry Wines ever since. This winery has been listed in Wine Spector with a 90 rating. It makes only 4 varieties of wine - Chardonnay, Riesling (dry), Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is not unusual to have the wines rest 3 years before they are bottled. Arnie, the owner... More

This is one of the oldest Ohio wineries. This has the best Chardonnay in the state. This has the best Cabernet to age in the state. This is not a Winery that pushes out new bottles every 6 months to meet demand. This is a Winery that creates vintage wines that age for 2-3 years before being bottled. Small batches... More

Started in 1968, early for modern Ohio vineyards. Very good Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Another vintner told us this one was the well respected granddaddy of the area wine industry. Very much enjoyed our conversation.

Charming winery tucked away in the woods. The wine we tasted was delicious and can stand up to California and France. This little gem is not cheap, however the quality justifies the price. The owner really seems to care about making great wine on his plot of land. Loved the rustic charm of this no frills spot. Their sheep dogs... More

Drove liked it seemed into no where. On unpacked roads. Don't waste your time. The place ,I hate to say is run down . The inside was filthy . Was not impressed at all. Did not care for the one wine that I tasted.

Don't let the negative reviews sway you. The location is a little difficult to find, the roads are dirt, the building does look like a cabin in the woods, the dogs do greet and welcome you to the property, it is a bit dusty inside, there's not much room for tasting, a mouse just might run past, however.... Arnie has... More

These wines are great. When I have people over for a tasting, I'll put out a Markko wine with both New World and Old World selections. The group always picks Markko Homage and Excelsior as their favorite wines of the group. It's a really cool, rustic location. This is a working winery that grows their own grapes, so be aware...
