About
Welcome to the new Archaeology Discovery Centre for the Isle of Wight! Enjoy our outdoor fossil challenge, guided walks and hands-on-history fun inside the former gun chambers of this 19th century coastal battery. Discover submerged stone age landscapes hidden beneath the waves, local shipwrecks and our amazing military history as well as exploring the science and technology used to uncover our past. And you can book a Timetraveller family workshop to really bring the past to life. Take an adventure into archaeology together when you recreate your own piece of history through cave painting, making Tudor purses or tribal pendants from nettle string. Spend a whole day enjoying the Planetarium, Reptilarium, Model Railway and our delightful beach-side Café or the old Boathouse Bistro. Sited within a beautiful Country Park, this is a splendid area for cycling and walking, and is accessible along the coastal path near Yarmouth and by no 7 bus.

The centre is situated along a lane just off the bus route to the Needles. Our two grand children aged 11 & 7 were fully engaged inside for approx 2 hours doing discovery type activities. The added attraction was the animation suite where they compiled and filmed animation sequences a most compelling well spent morning.

Visited here last week whilst on holiday with another family, all adults and the children really enjoyed looking around. Its only a 5 min visit if you don't look at the info in there, there was lots in there to read and lots for children to enjoy. My 3 year old enjoyed all of it and he's hard to keep entertained and the 13yr olds, 9yrs olds, 6 & 7 year olds in our party equally enjoyed it especially the type writers. I would highly recommend a visit and we would def go back again. A real little gem of a place :)

Went here today, 4 adults and 2 children. We didn't have any plans so decided to turn up and see what it was like. We found it very interesting and learnt lots about the isle of wight. The kids had bits to do as they have a play corner with books, toys and dressing up items. It's relatively small, we stayed about an hour which was really pushing it. The 1 downside to it was that it was £14.00 for a family of 4 which I do think Is a bit steep considering the size of the attraction, although if you want you can come and go throughout the day. It's in an area with other attractions directly opposite, I think it would be a good idea if they maybe thought about offering an all day pass for all the attractions for one fixed price.

This is a lovely gem of a place which has been recently been taken over by a local archaeologist. The owner is hugely enthusiastic and knowledgeable and can tell great stories which bring the history of the island and its waters to life - you and your children will really enjoy them! He lets you handle some very interesting and ancient artefacts including a rusty C18th sword, a Palaeolithic hammer, a roman stone anchor - and much more. You can borrow a fossil-hunting/archaeology kit and take it out on the sea front to do your own exploring or you can join one of the workshops which they hold under the name "Time Taxi" - contact timetaxi@gmail.com. It's well worth going out of your way for a stop off here!

I took my 9 year old grandaughter to Fort Victora during half term. She was so enthralled with the Archaeology Centre and it's enthusiastic owner we didn't have time to see anything else. Well worth a visit for adults or children.

Never before did I appreciate the wonders of the Solent, which I have lived near all my life. This interactive museum astounded us and we were lucky enough to get a guided tour from the incredibly passionate owner. It should be a 'must' that we visit small independent gems such as this, as one tends to learn so much more than if you visit a larger more stuffy museum. Every 'age' is represented in this charasmatic building, and the history of the building itself lends more wonderment to the contents on display. Prepare yourself for a fantastic hour or so interacting with the amazing artefacts found literally just outside the building in the water. Keep up the good work! See you again.

Many thanks for such a thoughtful and eloquent review, its wonderful to hear that you had a fantastic time at the ADC and are especially grateful that you recognise the work we put in as an independent community museum. Its hard going without funding, but your comments and support make it all worth while, so thank you.

Didn't look big from the outside, but wow filled with interesting and unusual pieces from IOW and the surrounding waters. Each item has a story, if you are not lucky enough to have a tour, ask the curator to tell you some stories, his passion is infectious, especially for my kids.
Also thanks for lending us the fossil hunting kit (small refundable deposit) we found a couple of turtle shells and croc skin on the adjacent beach!

Lovely little archaeology museum covering from prehistoric to modern day. Had a guided tour from the curator Owen who enthralled the kids especially letting them hold 27,000 year old flint tools.
