This old Cinque Port church (Cinque Ports were the five harbour towns on the south coast which in Medieval times provided the king with ships and men in exchange for trading and other privileges) is a local landmark. Much of today's building dates from 800 years ago, though it has been altered many times. The handsome tower with its distinctive onion dome top is a 17th-century addition - built by Flemish protestant refugees, in the style of their homeland churches. The dome would have been in place when American Founding Father Thomas Paine was married at St Peter's in 1759. There was once a Norman church on the site and traces of masonry from this building can still be seen at the west end.

Unlike St. Mary’s which with all its fittings and fittings removed feels like an empty shell, St. Peter’s looks and feels like a traditional parish church as it has its pews intact. And yet this too is run by a Trust whose purpose is to...More

My wife and I visited this church, which is in the centre of Sandwich. It is a fine example of a medival church and has many old tombs in the floor dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The tower is worth the climb...More

This large former parish church is now administered by the churches preservation trust. There are many interesting bits to look at. Free entry, donation advised. Worth a short visit.

A redundant church saved by an organisation to keep it open to the public. There isn't a great deal to see inside and it was too cold to go up the tower (maybe another time), but it is worth a quick visit to see this...More

Fascinating history. Beautiful church. We didn’t do the Tower Tour as it was SO COLD today but it looks fun. Recommended.

The church is very small, nothing special, we paid to go up the tower and was only worth for the views as it was filthy, stairs very confined no space for two at time and plenty of bird poo.
