One of the great mining museums of New South Wales. Come and see our award winning "Fire in the Mine" light and sound show, which tells the stories of working underground in the Lithgow region coalfields in the 20th century. There are many more interpretations of coal and oil shale mining. We also have facilities to host luncheons and wedding receptions.

Absolutely worth the visit. Firstly the State Mine Museum was a fabulous revelation about how underground mining worked in the early day, pit ponies and everything sweated labour and mine props. Next was the State Mine Railway where Vintage Trains are based for Operation to Kandos and Tarana on scheduled runs. Third but not least was the Lithgow Loco Workshop... More

We were driving along taking in a scenic drive when we stumbled across this great piece of history. We had the pleasure of seeing (and hearing) the old diesel loco get fired up.

Wow is all I can say. My four children had a blast. Tour guide was very friendly and helpful at all times. The activities were hands on and there was no rushing around. There was plenty of time to take in everything that was shown. I encourage everyone to go and take in some local knowledge and fun

We found on arrival that access is only by guided tour. Our guide, a volunteer, was very friendly and got us thoroughly engaged in the story of the mine, its development and ultimate decline and how this affected the Lithgow area. We thoroughly enjoyed two hours here and had to leave because we had reached closing time. Probably not suitable... More

Really nice drive to the old mine site. For some reason the museum wasn't open which was disapointing. The only sign of life out there were a few guys working on trains and a bunch of tents belonging to some outdoor education group. A few signs dotted around explaining various aspects of the site. Interesting, but hoped for more.

The lithgow State Mine museum is not well publicised or signposted, but it is well worth hunting out. It is open on weekends and during school holidays but when we arrived just after noon on a Sunday, we were the only visitors and to begin with struggled to see if it was open or not. Eventually we were met by... More

Thank you so much for your generous review. Responses such as yours are very encouraging to our volunteer workforce. As you may know, in Australia museums such as ours are often community owned and funded, and must generate their own income streams. Visitors such as yourselves are a great asset to our organisation. Finally having found it open, i managed to visit the museum. It us a truly amazing learning experience. Although i grew up in Lithgow, i have been away from the town for the past 30 years and all of this to me is new. My son, and myself, thoroughly enjoyed the personalized and friendly approach to looking through the museum... More

Hi Mark. Thank you for this wonderful review. We are glad you enjoyed your time with us. This site was virtually derelict when we took it over in 1990 and we are just now seeing the fruits of our... More
