I went here on school field trips. Most of the old buildings are still in use. There's a central garden that all the members worked in. Friendly people in the few shops. Occasional special events where volunteers are in period dress, demonstrating crafts. Interesting place.

The German immigrants who founded Zoar wanted to practice a collective life along strict Protestant principles. For many, the key fact remembered about them is that for a while they lived a celibate life, but apparently that had economic reasons: women were needed to help...More

Since we got a $35, 18-month membership to the Ohio History Connection, which provides free admittance to many historic sites around Ohio, we have been taking little two day explorations. The neat thing about Zoar is that it has so many original buildings, not replicas....More

Local interpreters tell the 80 year long story of the German Separatists who lived, thrived, and then died in this middle Ohio community in the 19th century. Several buildings are restored and open to the public including a #1 house, hotel, meeting house (church), garden...More
