We just got back from the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, we opted not to go to the Sheep Rock Unit as it was an additional hours drive on top of a long 2 hour drive from Bend. We probably arrived...More

The long drive was worth it. This is a remote spot with incredible views. The Visitors center is a must. The Painted hills are some of the best I've ever seen. Very desert landscape.

This place doesn't deserve a poor review just because I am not particularly interested in paleontology. The visitor center is well done and informative, but for me personally I would not drive 3 hours from the Tri-Cities area to here and and back just to...More

We hiked through the Painted Desert and the Clarno Unit. They are both beautiful and easy to hike. There were not a lot of people here even for a holiday weekend. I'm not complaining, just surprised that more people do not take advantage of this...More

The visitor's center is staffed with cheerful, knowledgeable people who enjoy helping people of all ages learn. The museum is small, but well designed and has an on site lab with viewing. Tours are available, but may require reservations.

We took the 45 minute tour of the museum. A lot of information. Great knowledgeable guide. Very hot. Outdoor hikes the earlier the better.

A bit of a drive to reach the destination, but so worth it. This area of Oregon is underreported. The Sheep Rock Unit and the Painted Hills Unit are the highlight. Must see the Paleontology Center.

The Visitors Center is truly awesome! Beautiful architecture, interesting exhibits (if you read English), friendly staff, nice places outside to sit and have a picnic.

We enjoyed the visitor's center at Sheep Rock. It has a lot of artifacts and was very informative. We loved the Painted Hills, so unusual! We did a short trail at Painted Cove. There was a lot of signage, which had a lot of interesting...More

I honestly don't know. Your best bet is to call the Monument's Visitor Center or perhaps the community of John Day's visitor center or Chamber of Commerce.
