The Oregon City Municipal Elevator has been in operation for over 100 years. The original elevator was constructed in 1915. It was powered by hydrolics and took about three minutes to reach the top of the bluff. In 1925 it was converted to electric power that was being generated by the water flowing from the Willamette river. The current elevator was completed in May of 1955. It was included on the National Register of Historic places in May of 2014.

The elevator is owned by Oregon City and staffed by the Downtown Oregon City Association. Current hours are Monday-Saturday 7am-7pm and Sunday 10am-7pm.

Always fun for the kids :)

We go here every few years to take a ride up and look around the viewing station at the top. There is also a long ramp to the side and the top of the bluff has a nice walking path.

Last weekend we discovered Oregon City, the end of the Oregon Trail. Although we only had a short time (we were on our way to the Wooden Shoe Tulip festival, another annual must to see), we stopped and took the Municipal Elevator (at 6 Railroad Ave) 180 feet up the cliff to a picturesque walk way. The elevator building above... More

There are scenic stairs that walkers can use to get up the hill from downtown Oregon City to mid-City up on the hill. But from time to time, it is such a joy to enjoy the ride, the view, and the ever friendly operators on the Oregon City Elevator! They even permit dogs to ride the elevator. The inside of... More

Elevator is operated by an elevator operator. Excellent view of the city and "sky line." Nice short cut to downtown if you have trouble finding parking.

It's not a wild ride; but, it's a cool one. A unique, city operated, staffed elevator that is one of only 4 municipal elevators in the country. It is also the only vertical street in America: Elevator Street. It has cool mid-century design and should not be missed while visiting Oregon City.

Elevator is a funky local icon with good views and short area history, nice walking trail on top (with Still House Pub at the end about 1/4 mi). Once on top there's an interesting river view of old industry and Willamette Falls.

Centered in an important historical area. Views of the Willamette are great. The elevator is hydraulic and the toilets don't flush in the neighborhood while the elevator goes up. Just the houses in this neighborhood were the end of the Oregon Trail.

Take your time and read about the history. This is really cool. Take the stairs back down. Walk the trail at the top. This never gets old.

We have taken the elevator yearly to see the beautiful view. The historical paintings are very interesting. We always enjoy walking the promenade at the top.

I always park above and ride the elevator down when I shop or go to restaurants in downtown Oregon City. Parking can get quite congested downtown, but up on the bluff it's pretty stress-free. Most everything is within easy walking distance. The views from the observation area and along the promenade are spectacular.
