We ate dinner here at a very good Thai restaurant (Mee Gin Thai Soul Restaurant- see my review) and then wandered around the neighborhood. It was amid of eclectic shops selling books, vintage and new clothing, records, gifts, artwork, etc. Some of the shops were out of the ordinary and some run of the mill. If you come here to eatlweave an hour to walk and see the shops, even better walk on the side streets and take a look at the beautiful craftsman style homes and their gardens, they are lovely and some are quite whimsical in their decorations.

We walked around Hawthorne for an hour. Some interesting shops - like a lower, touristy type of merchandise - for stuff to take home. It satisfied our needs but i would not call it a destination.

Hawthorn is the kind of area that is be rife with shops and people that make Portlandia a case study of Portland neighborhoods. Aggressively “with it”. Hippy chic. An eclectic walk. A stroll down the street is part protest march.

I had the opportunity to see a different part of Portland. I decided to check out the Hawthorne District. It was a strip of shops and restaurants that were not your run of the mill. There were vintage clothing shops, gift shops, small cafes and different ethnic restaurants. I wandered in the streets behind Hawthorne and found cute neighborhoods with bungalow style homes. I stopped by Rachel’sGinger Beer and chatted with Caitlin who was super friendly and helpful telling me about the area and giving suggestions for food and entertainment . I then headed to the Mississippi area for dinner and a night of jazz.

Hothorn is it cute area with lots of places to eat cute shops in great vintage stores however trying to find a place to park here is absolutely ridiculous. It’s almost not worth the bother as it takes forever to find a place to park. I feel terribly sorry for the people that live in the area.

If you love vintage clothing this is the place for you and by vintage I mean vintage, clothing from as early as the 1920's. If you are like me you will be lost for hours, loved it.

I come from Los Angeles and usually you can find any ethnic food it's just a matter of getting to the place. Here on hawthorne Ave the food choices are concentrated in a mile stretch: Lebanese, Cuban, thai, brewpubs, bars, etc. There are a good number of retro and vintage shops. Even a goodwill store. Now you wonder why I mentioned that well if you want Nike gear on the cheap you can find it in the used clothing area not the latest

This is a great place to find quirky, artsy, and trendy shops with a sense of humor. There are some boutique clothing and accessory stores that sell hip, higher end fashion, but if you're looking to hunt and score deals on second hand clothing, check out Buffalo exchage, red light, crosscroads and house of vintage. The Bagdad Theatre is a good central reference point, where you can side walk sit with a beer and watch the local wildlife. ;) Great places to shop for handmade goods, screen printed tees and gifts, are Presents of Mind, Powells Books (lots of fun things there besides books) and Asylum. Rice Lovers is another great shop with prints and other things with that Portland whimsey. There are a few food trucks along the street and a cafe called Harlow that has good local smoothies and fare (try the beet cocoa on a rainy day!) Next time, I'm going to check out Vintage Pink and Maple Vintage further down the street! Meridian Stardust has great cocktails and food. Portland Cider Company is here too, and has only $7 flights where you can taste 5 of their 30 ciders. Lots to do within these few blocks!

There are a number of super cool vintage shops here. House of Vintage goes on for days and was varied and fascinating. There are others on the street as well, but I didn't have time to visit them all. If you like vintage, this is a half day trip plus lunch at one of the food carts. A great Portland experience.
