This is a great place to find quirky, artsy, and trendy shops with a sense of humor. There are some boutique clothing and accessory stores that sell hip, higher end fashion, but if you're looking to hunt and score deals on second hand clothing, check out Buffalo exchage, red light, crosscroads and house of vintage. The Bagdad Theatre is a... More

Even though the neighborhood is full of weirdos, I like the shopping and food and the people watching too.

There are a number of super cool vintage shops here. House of Vintage goes on for days and was varied and fascinating. There are others on the street as well, but I didn't have time to visit them all. If you like vintage, this is a half day trip plus lunch at one of the food carts. A great Portland... More

We went to the Hawthorne Street Fair for several hours and enjoyed the vendors, shops and food at the event. Will definitely go back next time we are in Portland.

While the wife was at a 2 day training seminar, the girls (12 and 15) and I checked out as much of Portland as we could in that short amount of time. The Hawthorne District was recommended by a local friend as a neat place for shopping. There were few shops that interested us very much, but the people watching... More

We'd heard such great things about all the retro and vintage shops on Hawthorne Avenue. We walked from about 20th Street to 50th and saw very few. There WERE lots of restaurants of all nationalities, several bars, lots of clothing store and salons. But not much vintage or retro. Can't say we'd go back.

Hawthorne has been cleaned up a bit since I was in high school: no more hippie types raising funds by painting faces with glitter glue, and Marco's Pizza & Subs is long gone, but enough of the original feel has remained. Buy a book at Powell's on Hawthorne, have a pint at Portland Cider House, browse the cute little shops,... More

Strolling through The Third Eye is like finding yourself tripping through a Grateful Dead Head shop. I can be fascinating. Interesting. And cause you to think of things that you have not thought of in ages. The shop is located at 3950 SE Hawthorne BLVD. Inside The Third Eye you will find Tie-Dyed Clothing. Crystals. Candles. Books and Magazines. Incense.... More

Hawthorne is "trendy" area in Portland. Cute shops, nice places to eat and a lot of people watching. I love the Fred Meyers and their sushi train. Fun to take a newbie for sushi. So many different things to try in small amounts. Red light clothing exchange is a kick. Great vintage clothing.

Sip some ice tea at Peet's or have a cider or beer at one of the many bars that line this street, and watch the world go by. As many times as I've sat and watched people, I still see amazing things that make me turn my head or lift an eyebrow. If you want Gucci shops ... go elsewhere.... More
