This is a vast labyrinth of bookshelves across various floors and a few buildings which have been joined together over the years. The choice is huge and there are people who will help you find what you are looking for or order it if you want. There is a cafe as well.

SO MANY BOOKS. It is overwhelming when you first enter the store because it is just so huge. There are many rooms with different categories/genres. There are three floors. You can easily spend a whole day in Powell's. The books are priced depending on what shape they're in, new or used. Prices are reasonable. You can find books you wouldn't... More

It's easy to get lost in this massive bookstore! Everything is organized really well and there are plenty of workers that will help you find what you're looking for. Prices are extremely reasonable and the used books are in great condition. I highly recommend checking it out - it's well worth the visit.

I wish I had a week to explore. Very helpful but unobtrusive staff. Great displays. Used mixed in helpfully with new.

This place has everything that's ever been printed, I swear. So many books that they have ELEVATORS to take you to different floors. This place is a vacation destination in itself - stay in a nearby hotel and spend three days buying books. I'm pretty sure they sell suitcases for you to pack them all home in, too.

I've visited Portland anywhere between 1 and 3 times per year for over 15 years. That's a lot of visits to a city that I love. In all that time, over all those visits, there is one stop I ALWAYS make, and it is Powell's Books. I love books. I love to read. I love finding books about random subjects... More

Wow what can you say about Powell's City of Books. It is a true treasure. Our family has visited Powell's for over 30 years. When our children were young we made a yearly trip to sell and then buy more books for them to read the next year. It is a must visit. Go when you have lots of time.... More

Yup. that's it. Much has it been said about it but it's truly legendary among locals and visitors alike. Floors of books, mostly standard stuff but then again a lot of obscure and rare things too. You can easily spend hours browsing it's shelves. It runs on expensive side but then again it beats shopping on amazon.

Amazing place to visit. Books for all ages and genre lovers. Open late. They let you take books into the coffee shop to read just like a library.

If you only have an hour, you'll have to zip through the multiple floors and sections of Powell's, which rivals the old Strand Bookstore in NYC and Leary's in Philadelphia. It has that wonderful old-fashioned bookstore feeling, yet all the material and services are up to date. The color-coded system makes meandering easier, and the salesperson who greets you at...
