Oregon's oldest estate winery and the birthplace of Oregon Pinot Noir. In 2014 HillCrest was recognized by the state of Oregon and in Vienna, Austria for its global contributions to the world of fine wine. In 2003 the DeMara family, with over 36 years of winemaking and grape growing around the world, took over from the Father of Oregon wine and HillCrest founder Richard Sommer. Today they specialize in classic European varieties from France, Spain and Germany crafted using the very best of old world techniques. These include the use of patented concrete fermentors for reds, extended ageing of 2-7 years and dry farming. The DeMaras invite you to taste in their tasting room which is opened every day of the year minus the big 4 holidays. There is usually a selection of 8-9 wines that are available for tasting with many more wines for sale from the wineries library. These wines are only sold here at the winery.

I first visited Hillcrest 3 yrs ago while on vacation from Omaha. Since then, I've been back multiple times, purchased multiple cases of wine, and even wrote about the winemaker in my most recent book, Gifts of the Dark Wood: Seven Blessings for Soulful Skeptics (and Other Wanderers) because Dyson DeMara is such an inspiring person as well as world-class... Greetings and thank you for your very kind words Eric. We feel so fortunate to have found our calling in the world of fine wine. As I have told many others, it sometimes feels like winehas chosen me instead of the other way around. The ability to have taken over such a historic property from the Father of Oregon wine,... I am a previous visitor and a wine club member. The wine is great and the DeMaras love and knowledge of wine making is apparent in each sip you take. The tasting room is quaint and comfortable. I enjoy the wine club as the shipment includes two of their locally produced wines and two of their international wines. You won't... More

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your kind words. Our family loves what it does and we try to share this passion for the subject in our tasting room in a personal and informative way. We had a most pleasant surprise when visiting. Caught the owner knee deep in a grape wagon. Very nice and informative tasting room hostess. She also recommended very nice greek restaurant in town. Joining the Wine Club has turned out to be a good decision.

Lois thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our winery and its wines. When we moved from Napa, to take over HillCrest Vineyard, many years ago we wanted to be as hands on as possible and to share what is our passion for wine in as direct a way as possible. It seems that you experienced... More

Hillcrest Winery has been at the top of our list in Oregon since we first tasted their wines more than 20 years ago. Susan and Dyson are knowledgable, informative, and produce a spectrum of exceptional wines. We joined their wine club because we have never had a wine from Hillcrest that we didn't thoroughly enjoy. The DeMaras' depth of experience... More

Thank you Toni for sharing your thoughts and kind words. We love what we do and try to do our best to offer not only wines that taste good, but that are unique and reflect our nature and palettes. In today's world of industrial wine we try, as you know, to produce something that speaks to a time long ago... More

Hillcrest wines are unmatched in Southern Oregon and, perhaps, the whole world of wine. Where else can you find a deep, mysterious red blend such as "Anonymous" or several expressions of Tempranillo (all excellent) or a Pinot Noir that surpasses anything the Willamette Valley has to offer? The DeMara's are well-traveled, bringing some of their European work to their Roseburg... More

Wow Rick thank you! You need to speak to my mother! Making wines that are only sold here allows us to create very unique styles and blends that just aren't possible in the modern world of distributed products. When we moved here from Napa it was because we believed in this nature to produce wines as great as any in... More

Oldest winery in the Roseburg area, and a very good one indeed. Dyson and Susan runs a great operation. Some of the wines are imported from Europe but I think most are grown locally. As far as I know they do not sell anywhere except at the winery. For a premium product, the wines are priced moderately. Check out the... More

The tasting room is small, but the experience is large at Hillcrest. This is a family winery run by a family with a true shared love of wine, and not just the wines they product in the Umpqua valley. Their own locally produced wines are fantastic, but also, because Dyson loves great wines, he visits wineries throughout the world (well,... More

On a family vacation in Southern Oregon, we stopped at a few wineries in the Umpqua area. Most of the wineries have cutesy gift shops and potted plants along with a scenic visual experience of their fields. Upon entering Hillcrest Winery we noticed a lack of that kind of experience but we continued onto the tasting room. Great idea! In... More
