Gilbert House Children's Museum (formerly known as A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village) is a private nonprofit children's museum connected to downtown Salem's Riverfront Park. Founded in 1989, Gilbert House provides innovative and stimulating educational experiences which spark children's natural curiosity. The Museum's mission is to "inspire children to learn through creative play." This is accomplished through fun and challenging exhibits, camps, birthday parties, membership opportunities and outreach programs in the sciences, arts, and humanities. The Museum is composed of three historic houses; the Rockenfield House, Gilbert House and Parrish House.

The museum has a gigantic outdoor play structure and many interactive educational rooms in old Victorian homes. Our kids played store for an hour in the very first room!

Once you get there you may have trouble getting your children to leave. You will like the different themed rooms. The children can play with hands on toys and puzzles. You can go outside to the play area and take pictures on a sunny day....More

Lots of fun hands on activities for kids and stuff, but I found myself playing the Michigan fight song (my wife went there) on the play structure out back. I think it might have lead into On Wisconsin as well but I don't remember. It's...More

AC Gilbert's Discovery Village is a treasure in the Salem community. The outdoor climbing tower was constructed by volunteers years ago. Inside the several houses on the property, there are rotating exhibits...so it's not always the same. It's educational as well as fun for the...More

There is no main museum. It's in three older houses and some out buildings. If you can't go up stairs then you miss part of the two homes. It's all hands on and designed for younger kids so great for preschoolers and elementary kids. Older...More

This is one of the best, most unique children museums we have been to-and we have done many! It is very unique in set up, spread across three houses, plus two smaller buildings and a huge outside space. Only the first floors are accessible, so...More
