Located in Bury, just 30 minutes from Manchester City Centre, is the award-winning East Lancashire Railway, a heritage railway that runs steam and diesel train services through the beautiful Pennine Lancashire scenery. There are plenty of things to see and do and stations are well equipped for group visits with cafés, pubs, gift shops and a dedicated Transport Museum, housing vintage vehicles, transport memorabilia and interactive exhibits. Guided tours and talks are also available. The railway also has some fantastic events scheduled throughout the year from guided Rail Ale Trail tours of some of the excellent local drinking spots to the nostalgia of their award winning 1940's weekend. Looking for something a little different? Why not indulge in a luxury steam train hauled dining experience on board Orient Express style carriages, learn to drive a train or get snap happy with a Photography Course?

Every boys dream, so they say! Well, you can do it for real on the East Lancs Railway (ELR) based at Bury, Manchester. You have to pre-book and it isn't cheap! But it is absolutely worth every penny. My day started, with 7 others, with a briefing at 08:45 outlining the day, introducing the various activities and highlighting both health... More

Went to the East Lancs Railway on 2nd April with two grandchildren 4 and 2 years and we were amazed at the brilliant set up. Bury Station was patrolled by Star Wars characters and the passage from the ticket office was a scene from Doctor Who with a Dalek on guard. Ramsbottom Station was Jurasssic Park and in the Bury... Always a good trip on a steam locomotive, Bury to Rawtenstall. This was midweek so the frequency was limited and unfortunately chilly so a browse around Rawtenstall was sacrificed for a return to Bury market and Black Pudding.

Had a great day using East Lancashire Railway. Had a ticket that allowed us to hop on and off throughout the day. The trains were a joy. All the operatives staff etc were thoroughly enthusiastic and shared the feeling. Thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended.

The whole day was fantastic!! Reasonably priced and no where near as over crowded as the day out with Thomas can get. Loads of characters who were entertaining and brilliant with the kids. Would highly recommend to families!!!!!

Visited the East Lancs Railway today on a wet and cold Easter Sunday. The A4 had failed but the Hughes Crab deputised adequately. Bury station is a credit to the volunteers who built it. It is one of the few preserved railway locations that has the old "town centre" and commercial feel to it. The climb out of Bury certainly... More

Date night with a twist. We'd been talking about doing a murder mystery event for a while, and we're so glad we decided to opt for the East Lancs Railway event. We weren't sure what to expect, but from the minute we arrived on the platform it was brilliant. The scene was set and after a quick selfie in the... More

Wonderful step back in time journey with the East Lancashire railway. Steam-hauled train reminded me of the good old days of steam travel. Would recommend this.
