Make this your first stop when visiting historic Bluffton, South Carolina. Whether you'd like to tour the house-museum, have questions about local history, need maps of the area, or just want to know where to have lunch while you're in town-- we would love to see you! The Heyward House was constructed circa 1841, and is one of only eight antebellum homes remaining in the Lowcountry coastal town of Bluffton, South Carolina. In 1998, the home was purchased by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society and opened to the public for tours, field trips, and events. In addition to being a beautifully preserved house-museum, the Heyward House also acts as the official town Welcome Center, providing maps, information, menus, and more to visitors and residents. Because of its well-preserved condition, the Heyward House is now an Official Project of the Save America's Treasures Program, a public-private partnership between the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The home is open to the public for tours Monday - Friday: 10-5 and Saturday 10-4. Group tours and guided walking tours of the historic district are available with advanced reservations.

We recently visited Heyward House with our 6 yr old. We did the self-guided, app driven tour, and were pleasantly surprised! It was easy to use, full of historical information, and fun for our daughter to navigate! We had a leisurely stroll around Old Town at our own pace! Worth a visit!

We enjoyed our lively house & walking tours. The Heyward House guide was not deeply knowledgeable, but made up for it for it with her enthusiasm. Our walking guide was an actual Heyward descendant who fascinated us with her firsthand account of Old Town Bluffton through the years. The memories she shared were personal and we felt lucky to meet... More

Ed, the stellar docent was waiting on the porch when we arrived. For $10 each, he took us through the house and grounds telling the stories of the families who had lived there and their progress through history. He is a most interesting and observant person. Easy in his knowlege of the area and its place in history. Very enjoyable... More

The Heyward House tour was of course historical but also entertaining! There were also insinuations of spirits presents, which added some drama. In addition, a volunteer, who lived a good part of her life, growing up in Bluffton, provided an excellent tour of the town. Also we attended the farmers market on main street, don't miss it!

We enjoyed our tour at the Rose Hill Plantation. I have visited many historical homes but never felt as welcomed as in the Rose Hill. The tour guide was informative and was a wonderful host. THE owner of the estate stopped into the tour to meet us and share her stories. What a gracious women. Offered a nice glass of... More

This tour was an unexpected visit but super quaint little area. I started with the Hayward House and visited other historical sites in the area. I also enjoyed lunch near the house as well. Great tour and covered a lot of history for the area. I especially liked the information related to the Civil War. Thanks Karen, you did a... More

I was the only person on the house tour, so that was unexpected, but very nice, since it was a busy day in Bluffton (farmers' market day). The tour guide was knowledgeable, very pleasant and extremely helpful.

We visited in November to get the local history in Bluffton and got more than I expected. The guide was extremely interesting and shared much of the lowcountry history and gave us much more stories related to the families who lived in this house and the slave trade during this period. Highly recommended.

We toured the house and also took the walking tour with Larry, our decent guide. Larry was excellent, very knowledgeable of the town and area. As we walked through historic Bluffton, he pointed out various homes, shops, churches, etc. while sharing facts and stories of different times. Very interesting! Definitely recommend taking the walking tour and the Heyward House tour.
