Gators and Wading Birds

As a birder I was in heaven to see multitudes of warblers, wading birds, and a heron rookery! Early morning was an ideal time to explore quietly and take it all in!

Far from the hustle and bustle of downtown Charleston is this magical, still place that allows you to walk through an enchanted cypress swamp on an elevated boardwalk. Depending on the time of year you visit, the creatures you spot will change, but we saw lizards, turtles, and, most wonderfully, a bard owl.

This is an extra tour cost to the gardens, but it's a really small fee. If you want to see something different than a load of gardens, this is really cool. You get to see wildlife in it's natural habitat, turtles, alligators, herrin, egrets, etc. The boardwalk also has different horticulture postings and animal postings along the way with informative... Boardwalk not well maintained. Lots of algae. Nothing there in the winter. Boardwalk at Francis Beidler Forest much nicer (still little to see in the winter).

Worth the time to visit anytime of year. This is the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens property with Audobon Swamp Garden tours by a property 'train' or boat (fees for each in addition to admission - that have been kept quite reasonable through the years). This is a walk into our pre-civil war past on a 60 some-odd acre property that... More

I had never been to a swamp before. I was surprised that it was beautiful in a different way than the Magnolia Plantation Gardens! Many birds, some turtles, and yes, GATORS! Much walking, and worth seeing. We also found an African American burial area, where readable headstone markers showed many members of the Bennett family were laid to rest.

We chose the Magnolia plantation and gardens over the other plantations on offer in this area on the basis of wanting to see a swamp garden! As Brits, we can visit stately homes with manicured formal gardens any day of the year at home, so this place, which lies within the grounds of the Magnolia plantation, was a good draw... More

We really enjoyed our time at Audubon Swamp Garden which we visited in July 2015. The raised walkways were great as you were able to keep really clean although there were some areas that 'off road' but a bit of mud never hurt anyone. We felt we were able to get up close to the alligators but without being at... More

Beautiful, peaceful swamp-with raised pathways for great viewing of the swampland and the wildlife. We watched alligators sleeping peacefully, all sorts of herons, hawks, gulls and sea birds while listening to the sounds of the wild things. A wonderful experience-with we had hours to spend here! Skp the gardens, and go straight to the swamp!

Loved this swamp garden. My husband and I walked through it alone. It was eerily beautiful! Parts of it reminded me of walking into the video game "Myst." We saw several birds, turtles and alligators. The only disappointing part was that we drove about a half hour out of our way and only wanted to tour the swamp garden which... More
